FYI I still really stink at understanding the fly fishing lingo for now so my apologies. I believe that fishing is usually better when there is a full moon. People are more crazy when there is a full moon. Thank God He made fish the way He did so I can have better fishing when people are crazier than normal.
Geoff Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 Big thing is how much do you want to spend? The Sage Bass II rod/line/case combos are some sweet rods, but you're at 550 without a reel. Add a reel to it and you can look at another 50-200 bucks pending on your brand and what kind of quality you want. I have a Sage Bass I rod with an Allen Fly Fishing Trout 2 reel, it casts the big wind resistant flies extremely well plus it looks sweet. "When you do things right, people wont be sure you've done anything at all."
Gavin Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 There are tons of great rods out there Tim...I like a fast action 7wt with a weight forward line..Sage's high end models are the best fast action rods on the market IMO...but if you dont plan to use it much, I'd go down market.St. Croix, TFO....In reels, get one with a good disc drag. Lots of great reels out there too. The Lamson Konic is hard to top for the money. If I wasnt long on reels, I'd be buying those...In flies....most of my topwaters are size 2-1/0...Gaine's Sneaky Pete's, variations of Tim Holschlag's blockhead poppers, Murdich Minnows, some #4-8 Madame X's if they are really picky...most of my subsurface flies are 3-4" long..usually on a size 4 or bigger hook..Mostly Shenk's Minnows, Sparkleminnows, Sex Dungeon's, and Circus Peanuts. Have fun.

Get a 9' or 8' 9" for wading or a 7 1/2'- 8' for a use in a kayak or canoe. Pick one in your price range. Put a Cabelas Prestige plus reel on it and a SA mastery Headstart line. All good equipment that will last you a long time. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Have fun. Where do you buy your larger subsurface flies that are about 3-4 inches long? Im looking for long fly that looks like a worm. Any ideas? Gavin Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 Tim, I'd look in the saltwater bins at the fly shop..Montana Fly Company used to carry the Coffey Sparkleminnow...not sure if they still do. Best bet is to tie your own, or find a shop, or a friend to tie for you.

I know Sage/Reddington rep is going to be there and you can cast several rods, incl. other brands, on water plus you might win something you would be needing to buy anyways in the free raffles that will be held. Just a thought. Several folks will be tying flies as well so you can get info in that regard as well.
