Wayne SW/MO Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 I've used a purifier for decades, it beats hauling water, or worse being sick. I always start using my cooler water and then when it runs out I use a coffee filter over the intake. If you have a bunch of kids you might want to have some run the water threw a cone coffee filter in a funnel and then purify that water, it would be a little faster overall. Boiling spring water at night with what ever fire you have left would probably be the fastest, unless the fire source is a backpacking stove. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
2sheds Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 I'm wondering if we have developed a consensus yet. It makes a huge difference where you dip your bottle (top is bad, bottom is worse, mid-level is recvommended. There are lots of filter grades, the finer mesh are required for some conditions, including proximity to beaver. Is this close to what is being decided ? Untreated Water = HIghest Risk Low Quality Filter = Some Risk Chemically Treated (chlorine or iodine) = OK Boiled = OK High Quality Filter = Best
2sheds Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Hi Max Water cache opportunities: Assuming you will put in at Greer Crossing, you can cache water at Turner (5 mi) and Whitten (11 mi). Hike 1/4 mi to Huffstedler's store from Riverton (19 mi), cache water at Narrows-142 (28 mi) and Myrtle (33 mi). Not sure what opportunities exist after crossing into Arkansas. I always chemically treat or boil.

Wayne SW/MO Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 There are a lot of tablets available now that don't cause a bad taste. I have some in my gear that I've only used once, but I didn't notice any after taste. You can also carry coffee filters and bleach, get the recipe off the net. I don't remember the amount added or the time involved. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
