vonreed Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 Does anybody know if zebra mussels are known to be in Bull Shoals Lake? I was down there a couple days ago and found what I believe was zebra mussels. They were attached to a rock and I have never seen em before so I'm not sure. Maybe I missed the boat and this is old news that they are in the lake already.
Mike Worley Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 Yes, Zebra mussels are in Bull Shoals lake. It seems like every time we snag up a limb or rock from about HWY 125 (Peel) up past Tucker Hollow its got Zebra mussels attached to it. Not so much on the lower end of the lake but i'm sure it's just a matter of time.
powerdive Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 There are signs posted at ramps noting that Bull Shoals is infested and directing all boaters to clean off their boats and wash out their bilges. Maybe someone can snap and post a photo.
Wayne SW/MO Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 I know my fishing buddy and I were suspicious that they were there in '08. We fished for carp below the dam and there was one area on the east bank (Powersite) where your line would simply separate. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
vonreed Posted July 29, 2012 Author Posted July 29, 2012 Ok thanks guys. I figured it was known they were in there, but wanted to check to make sure.
Members ARweyes Posted August 5, 2012 Members Posted August 5, 2012 I have been catching a wad of them while spooning for about 3 years now. You will bring up a rock with several of them attached to it. I dive as well and have found them from Diamond City to the mouth of the Theodosia arm. Places are pretty bad with every rock on the bottom covered with them. We have several native fish that feed on them but I don't think it is possible for them to keep up with the zebra mussle population explosion. I fear what our beloved lakes will be like in 10 years. I don't believe it will be possible to keep them out of the rest of our lakes the way so many people travel from lake to lake, sometimes even during the same day.
Jerry Rapp Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 The Great Lakes have had them for 25 years or so. The smallmouth fishing has went ballistic since then. Use to take 15lbs to win a one day event. Now 25lbs or so. Maybe the Zebras aren't so bad?
