Mitch f Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 Well it seems the river levels are so low the fish are hungry and don't have as many places to hide. The reports of fish over 18" are numerous. Jets can't get thru the normal spots, which is a good thing for the fishing. At first I was concerned that this low clear water might last until gigging season and create a mass slaughter. Now I think the only holes getting gigged will be the ones within a half mile of the boat ramp. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor

Honestly, I haven't seen an 18" smallie yet this summer. I haven't been skunked since last year though.. I almost always pick up a 16" fish per trip nowadays, plus a lot of shorter fish.
cwc87 Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 The bass are surviving However, gigging season is 6 weeks from tonight September 15. The season last till Janurary 31 so with all the previous posts on the topic and the awareness is at a all time high. Or, maybe the river gods will bring some rain to muddy up the rivers all gigging season!!
Greasy B Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 Now I think the only holes getting gigged will be the ones within a half mile of the boat ramp. Maybe another positive result of the low water, let's hope so. From my experience this has been a pretty good Smallmouth season. Mitch f Posted August 12, 2012 Author Posted August 12, 2012 Went yesterday, the bigger ones were hitting the jig, lots of dinks on top. The bigger fish were all in 2 spots....I think Al knows those 2 spots well "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
ozark trout fisher Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 It's been a good few months of smallie fishing around here for sure. I can't say I've been catching larger fish than usual, but the numbers have been very solid. And being chest deep in a spring-fed stream has been the just about the only suitable outdoor activity most of this summer, so I've done quite a bit of it. I hope we don't pay for it down the road, but seeing as how there's nothing I can do about it, I might as well just enjoy the good fishing we're experiencing now. Not much rain in the forecast but the cooler weather should take some stress off the fish. The fishing was certainly excellent yesterday evening with temperatures in the 70s.
Chief Grey Bear Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 Shouldn't all of the other meat hunters be taking home stringer loads these fish?? I am pretty positive they know the rivers as well or better than anyone. Hey Oneshot, I have some baked brownie recipes if you need one. They are sweet but, they ain't the ones put a candle in!
