I wanted to do a small writeup on Maramec Springs. This has been the only place I've been able to fish for trout this last year.

Everyone seemed to catch close to or their limit. There were families filling coolers with stock trout. Of course, power bait is the bait everyone uses. (I know that isn't true, but it sure does seem like it.) I guess that is why people don't post on here about the great trout they landed like they do on the tanneycomo forum, but there are some good trout swimming there. Saturday an eleven year old boy caught over a 6 pounder. The look on his face was priceless.

I did so-so. Had a hook up on a black wooly bugger, and some strikes on a small streamer. I went back Sunday and again people were pulling trout out like clock work. One young man caught two trout over 5 pounds. When I asked what he was using(he had spinning rod) he said that he was using some kind of small fly that had gold in it. One fly fisher when asked how many he had caught, told the fellow that he had four and yet he fished on. Maybe I was wrong and he was catch and releasing.

I saw one boy four or five year old reeling in a fish. He was doing a fine job. His father came and netted it for him. When I walked by them, he said, I caught a trout. The pride in his voice echoed in his fathers smile. I remember myself as a four or five year old catching my first bluegill at Lake of Ozarks. I won't be back until the Women fish free day in September but Maramec Springs is just a nice little park. Go visit if you can.

I've got to get out there and check meramec springs as soon as my foot gets back to normal or close to it. How hard do you think it is to fish meramec springs, if your not in condition to stand around much/have to sit while fishing for most of the time? Like bobber fishing for example, is it possible or will the current just sweep it down the stream and cause you to get snagged or in the way of other people?

While I seldom fish there I couldn't agree more that it is a wonderful park and a great place for young people and folks with limited mobility to fish. It's also interesting to see the contrast between how a private park is managed compaired to the state managed parks. I realize that the fishery is maintained by the state as well as wildlife law enforcement but I don't think the enforcement officials spend as much time hiding in the bushes spying on folks like they do at the public parks.

Harris,

There are some spots you should be able to fish sitting. There are people there every weekend sitting in lawn chairs that catch fish. You would probably be limited to powerbait fishing off the bottom because of the current. Not to say you couldn't use a bobber (it's called a strike indicator when you trout fish) but in most places there is at least some current. Your best bet would be to get down there during a week day when the crowds are low and pick out a nice spot on one of the rock jetties they have. Good luck and I hope you have a speedy recovery.

I noticed the restriction to single hook roostertail type lures for the winter c&r, that got me wondering if that applies during the non c&r season or if roostertails with trebles, as well as crankbait type lures are allowed during those times?
