with a gar on the fly. On some advice I succuesfully solicited from Bird Watcher, I headed to Spring River OK on Sunday to chase some Gar on the fly rod. I had wanted to do this all summer, I just wasn't sure about which water to try. It all came together on Sunday.

Did some recon,

This was a blast. After I got the art of fly fishing for gar dialed in, I landed two more. I will definitely chase these again!

Thanks for the report. I have been hearing about Gar fly fishing forever and have always blown if off. Now I'm getting inspired.

How'd they fight, Genome? Aerial? Down and dirty? Curious. Haven't caught a gar.

Congrats on the catch.

I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.

Most of the body of the fly is just some unravled and combed out nylon rope, I added some Puglisi fibers (white but turned gray with a gray sharpie) for the dorsal to give it a shad look, and some flashabou down the middle. I did most of that just because, I think you could have equal sucess with just the frayed out nylon rope.

Most people I talked to and videos I watched talked about the arieals. Biggest fish gave me the goods twice, with the two smaller gar each coming out the water completely, once each. They don't seem to have the latic acid threshold that carp have, but they fight great! Plus its mostly sight fishing. I can see how a 40lb 6 footer could be seen as the closest we are going to get to Tarpon here in the lower midwest.

Congrats man. Glad it worked for you. I bet it was a blast. I had a day up there this spring fishing for white bass that turned into a gar derby. They are a lot of fun to catch.

Good for you! Glad you got one...They are tough fish, they tug hard, roll alot, and they usually go airborne.
