Bill B. Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Thanks. I've definitely added the upper Mississippi to my short list of places to visit in the next year or two.
Gavin Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Awesome. Monticello has been on my bucket list for quite some time. Thanks for the report!
Al Agnew Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 My wife and I, and a couple who are good friends from Minneapolis, did a couple of one day floats in that area a few years ago. Our friends just paddled to the other bank from the put-in and fished that side all the way, while we fished the near side. There were very few places where I felt like we were fishing banks where there weren't any fish. We all caught a number of fish in the 20 inch class. And I hooked (briefly, before it bit through my line) what looked like a huge musky. Either that or a huge pike. And for a change of pace, we floated the St. Croix River, and then the Rum River. The Rum was the only disappointment...nothing but small bass and pike. The St. Croix was beautiful, clear, slightly tannic stained, and rocky, about the size of middle Current River. I've been up there several times fishing the Missisissippi and St. Croix, and have always caught big fish on the Mississippi and lots of somewhat smaller fish on the St. Croix.
