fishinwrench Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Looking good! That shad colored one is gonna get hammered. I threw some of those Sunday for the first time, big as a 1/2 chicken. Crazy incredible action and not as hard to sling on a 9wt. as I expected. We were actually getting them to skip up under docks and stuff and I was anticipating a BIG bite at any moment. What a fun fly to fish!

What a fun fly to fish! These things move a lot of water, and you're right crazy movement. I actually contacted the guys up at Musky Country Outfitters this evening, talked to B. Porter and I'm getting some of their Primo bucktail and some badass saddle in the next week or so. I'm stepping it up to the next level, the stuff I've been finding is sorta subpar for these huge flies but that's about to change. I'm pretty stoked. The weather is looking pretty good for Friday and Saturday, it's gonna be time to get out there. It's hard to say when this train is gonna end, one way or another we are gonna figure out the fly bite. There are very of few of us doing it, so there is plenty of room. Members pruett417 Posted October 13, 2012 Author Members Posted October 13, 2012 Back at it this weekend, with a new arsenal of flies including this articulated "Hang Time". Looks like some more challenging weather, but we will chucking and ducking none the less. Here is a few more of the offerings I've tied up in the last couple of days. Members pruett417 Posted October 15, 2012 Author Members Posted October 15, 2012 Well, the skin is tore off my stripping fingers, got a case of the "claw hand", man I love this dung! Spent the day chucking the biggest flies yet on sink tip and I'm feeling it today. We braved torrential downpours yesterday, 25-30 MPH winds, and 3 foot waves. All in all we seen no less than a dozen fish and that's conservative! Had 3 follows, one was a darn "trainwreck", a BIG (40 incher) exploded on a fly not more than 20 feet from the boat, only to miss the fly completely then ended up at the boat looking for it, a definite "Holy dung' moment. We rallied late after braving the wind and rain, ending up with drizzly calm conditions, but at that point our trolling motor was toast and couldn't slip around like we wanted to. Lot's of fish on the flats this evening, and the fish were shallow early. Once again we put out a helluva effort but couldn't get one in the boat today...... fishinwrench Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 This is great, even the fails have me riveted. Call in sick and do it some more! It's gonna happen next time out.

We keep telling ourselves that, even on the water, lol. It's just a matter of time. An expert is a person who has made every possible mistake in a small field of study.
Members pruett417 Posted October 19, 2012 Author Members Posted October 19, 2012 Back at it this weekend, the weather isn't to promising but we are bright eyed and bushy tailed. I think we are getting into that special time of the year, when the good fish are strapping on their feed bags. I really feel like we are going to connect this time around and get one of these fish in the boat. Trying out several new patterns that are gonna push a whole lot of water. Members pruett417 Posted October 21, 2012 Author Members Posted October 21, 2012 Pushed A LOT of water, made what seemed like thousands of casts, could only get out on Saturday this weekend and with the bluebird skies didn't expect much, and didn't get much in return. And judging by the lake traffic it was tough all over, boats were running all day and I don't think I seen one fish caught. Finally in the afternoon we got a slight breeze to chop up the surface a bit, but it wasn't enough. Sure wish I could be out there this afternoon, seems we have been always missing it by a day or so. The proverbial fat lady has not began to sing, the water temps are holding strong and I think we should have several more weeks of good fishing, now if mother nature and the fat lady could get on the same page we will be in business. Was able to be treated to this sight early Saturday morning. Unfortunately it turned into this. An expert is a person who has made every possible mistake in a small field of study.
fishinwrench Posted October 21, 2012 Posted October 21, 2012 Uh oh, I detect a shred of dwindling enthusiasm. C'mon now!
Members pruett417 Posted October 21, 2012 Author Members Posted October 21, 2012 Uh oh, I detect a shred of dwindling enthusiasm. C'mon now! Oh the enthusiasm is still there, lack of sleep is to blame........it seems as with all addictions you have your good days and bad days, and your ups and downs. It's quite a draining but cool thing to keep chucking those flies for 8+ hours a day. I can admit that it's mentally taxing above all, you have to be on your game every single cast, no one wants to be caught day dreaming by a big mean fish. I'm not giving up, in fact I think I'm more determined that ever........just a little stir crazy and delirious from it all, LOL!
