Justin92297 Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Iv been thinking about heading out to try walleye fishing for the first time a lot lately. First I need to know where, when, and what to use. Are there any places in or near st Louis I could catch walleye? Any info would be awesome!
Al Agnew Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 I haven't fished specifically for walleye anywhere near St. Louis (although I've done quite a bit of fishing for them on lower Black River). Probably the two best waters to fish near STL are the lower Meramec and the Mississippi below the Alton Dam. There are a couple of guys on here that know a lot more about the fishing in those places, so maybe they'll chime in with some advice.
exiledguide Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 When I lived in St Louis, I fished a few times each winter below the Chain Of Rocks bridge on the Illinois side. Caught mostly Sauger there in the winter only. The colder the weather the better the fishing. But you really have to want to catch those fish to put up with the cold. The walleye from the fiah market in U City tasted just as good and I didn't freeze my butt off. I would suggest you go over there in January and observe how those guys catch the fish and decide if you want to do it. I was never more than a novice fishing there and the best fishing was in freezing weather and you loose a lot of jigs and I don't reallycare to fish with live bait. If you do go there to fish DO NOT TRY TO WADE THAT RIVER more than one person has drowned there. Things might have changed since I left St Louis but I never saw anyone trying to catch walleye or sauger on the Mo side.A guy I worked with fished below the dams at Old Monroe and Winfield and that was productive for him but he had a huge river jon boat and if you dont a pretty big boat you can get in trouble on that river.
Mitch f Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 I'll second the chain of rocks bridge spot on the Ilinois side (you can use a Missouri license) and fish off the barrels. Lots of sauger and a few Walleye. You can also catch a ton of whites if time it right. If you have a boat go just below Alton Dam. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Hog Wally Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Meramec river. 141 bridge and up 20 miles I've caught my limit of whopper walleyes Plenty of whites also. Snagged below Winfield dam last spring and there apparently are a lot of walleye there cause we kept snagging them when we let our snagging rigs go to the bottom
Mitch f Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Justin, listen to exile........go to chain of rocks and fish. And DO NOT WADE! "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
