Bird Watcher Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 Here we go again. It's good to everyone present and accounted for and the new names as well. Nothing fancy for us this weekend. Friday I went scouting for ducks but found geese instead. Neither morning was a barn burner, but good enough. Scratched 5 Saturday morning. 150 on the loaf pond the day before but we only had one flock of eight come back in before we had to pick up. I tripled and Dad doubled. We had to leave by 10:30 and get home for another Thanksgiving dinner or else maybe could have ground it out and finished Dad's limit, but 5 was good enough for us. Sunday Morning we hit another pasture loafing pond. There were actually a good number of Gadwalls, Teal, and Shovelers using the pond, but we didn't bring a single duck decoy with us. We passed a half dozen shots at close ducks, just content to watch their aerial display while we waited on the geese. The first geese appeared at 8:45 and we had our six by 9:15. Nice little groups. We each took turns doubling on a pair, then had a flock of 8 come in and we each shot one bird to finish out our limit. Back home with the family by 10. Not bad for the first weekend of regular season. We also saw a flock of little squeaker Canada geese on Saturday. That's about the earliest in the year I can ever remember seeing them around here. Hope everyone has a good season and it's good to see OA getting busy again with waterfowl reports.

BilletHead Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 Good going Chris. We have went the last four days. Just some short hunts three days and a longer one yesterday. So far seven gadwall, one teal and eight geese. Windmill pond yesterday. There has been a few loafing there after fly off. We thought there might be a few early ones though. Just like the day we hunted last year they went off the larger windmill pond and flew in all directions. So we just sat and sat until 10:20, my belly started growling and I talked the Mrs. into the short drive to burger king for a some layout refreshments. She did and just as she left some came in I whacked one. Needless to say she was frowning as she came back as she had seen them heading to me as she drove off! I bet she will not let me talk her into anything like that again. Good to hear a few made it back to the old honey hole.
Jeff Olson Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 nice reports guys, I tried tablerock sat afternoon, and sunday morning. saturday only saw a few birds, but did have a sm flock of scaup come in 5 minutes before closing and dropped 2. and sun. am was slow also, but had a flock of mallards and another flock of scaup come into the deeks, and pulled 2 out of each flock. didnt see many birds, but very nice days just to get out. ( my green bay packers sure are stinking it up tonight.)
Jeff Olson Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 a little to add, with the temps dropping mon night I thought I would try the rock again. monday hunted 2;30 to close, very strong north wind !, only saw a few flocks and a few loners, no shots fierd. tue am 27 degrees ,from 6;45 to 7;30 saw about 15 nice flocks migrators, and about another dozen sm flocks working my area.missed a diver going warp speed with the wind and had 3 mallards decoy nice and dropped the 2 drakes. not much moving after 8;30, quit at 10 . only a couple shots but a fun hunt just seeing a good # of birds!
Bird Watcher Posted November 28, 2012 Author Posted November 28, 2012 Good job Jeff. I saw a flock of about 20 mallards on a farm pond in Barry County this morning and a similar flock on a farm pond in Jasper County. First flocks of mallards I've seen in SW corner this year.
Members Clayton Bass Posted November 30, 2012 Members Posted November 30, 2012 I've been out a couple of times, mallards seem pretty thin in this part of the world right now. I have saw some Canada geese but I've been having issues getting to shoot at them. Last day I hunted I was packing all the stuff in the truck when the geese flew right over the pond I had been hunting on.
Jeff Olson Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 with the weather forcast saying the low last night was supposed to be 32, I thought i would try the rock this am.well I had 41 at 5;30 and that did not bring any birds down. didnt see anything flying. did had 2 sm flocks of goldeneyes that were on the water work there way into about 150 yrds of my deeks .for about a hour I watched them diving around, that kept it interesting! did see 3 flocks of local geese flying.( might have to chase them down on land until we get some cold weather to come through) taking a friends young boy fishing tomorrow, hopefully find some crappies up long creek.
