BilletHead Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 The Mrs. and I have had a pretty good feathered body count so far this season but it has been one to four a hunt. Alot of work per bird but fun none the less. The last cold front brought more birds around. One pond we hunt had a bunch on it a couple days back. I struggle hunting this place as the birds seem to be hard to get close enough at times. Circle and leave or land too far out, not decoying well. Well today I went solo to try again. Strong southwest wind. I got to where the wind would move the decoys well. Also put out the MOJO mallard. I hardly ever use the darn thing but made up my mind to do it this morning. Kind of ran late and while grassing up the lay out heard wings and heard a splash or two. Still pretty dark and could not even find the birds on the pond. I hopped in and heard them leave. Soon a single came in and I shot it. A bit later a group of five and I dumped three. Then nothing for a long time. Then a ringneck rocketed in and landed. I watched it swim around up to my decoys. Then it started diving and feeding. Quiet again for another long spell. Long enough I got up and walked to the four wheeler and trailer, picked it up and started picking up the decoys. Thats when things started to happen again. More groups wanting to land so I threw out the picked up decoys. Hid the wheeler and got back into the blind. Soon there after five more came right in and I dumped the last two. A fun hunt when the birds worked like they are supposed to. When doing the final pick up more birds tried to land. Three gadwall drakes and three mallards. Yea I know two were hens buy hey it happened that way today. Just hasn't been enough birds to be picky but that might be a changing now. BilletHead Posted December 14, 2012 Author Posted December 14, 2012 Actually Duane there was two back to back groups of 40 to 50 birds each high and South bound heading you guys way this morning. Oh by the way we don't have rocks to hide in down here can you make a dirt blind? If you are going to make Phil a deer blind surely a dirt blind would be easy billetHead "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" BilletHead Posted December 14, 2012 Author Posted December 14, 2012 I bet the hardest part is getting the covers on their big brown eyes. Jeff Olson Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 nice hunt BH, I was out on the rock wed am & this am,very slow.I saw quite a few birds come in last night, all right at dark until i couldnt see any more through the binos. and then they are heading out and gone by 6:30 in the am. and then nothing new coming in after daylight. only a few divers scattered around lake. did manage 1 nice drake goldeneye on wed. nothing today. need a new push of birds!
BilletHead Posted December 14, 2012 Author Posted December 14, 2012 Well Jeff birds are on the way. I hunted a different pond this morning. Muffed a gimmie shot at a gadwall but managed the second one later. While laying there I wittnessed a mass of ducks heading south. At least 11 groups with the smallest flock I would guess 50. Largest flock I bet 500 birds and all were sky high heading south. Man it is so mild and will be for the next few days. I wonder what bug got up there butt to make them do this? Members Clayton Bass Posted December 14, 2012 Members Posted December 14, 2012 Is your blind sitting at about the normal water line? Because that is about how low the spot I normally hunt is, it's weird to be sitting in a layout in the spot you usually put your decoys. My hide from past years is 40yds or more from the water this year.
BilletHead Posted December 14, 2012 Author Posted December 14, 2012 Yes Clayton where my blind is would be normally underwater. It should be up in the grass.
