duckydoty Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Hunted up north west of Mt. Vernon this morning. It was blizzard like for a while and pretty cold out there. Worked quite a few birds till around 9 a.m. and then it just shut down. I think these were stale birds because the would spend what seemed like forever just hovering in the wind looking at our spread, spin off and then come back in for another look again and again. We ended up busting 3 green heads, 2 green wings, and one Christmas Goose. Hope some of them birds up north get cold and decide to move on down tonight and tomorrow. Gilly Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 I live in the Omaha, Ne. area. Lots of birds in the air late this afternoon. Sun came out around two. Could hear them prior to that. Not certain how far they'll push. Probably past Squaw Creek as it looks like they got snow too. But they were flying high/fast. Article in the paper today....One of the guides north of us (he's 94 years old, Ralph Kohler) calls the shot on a group of Canada's. One of those big boys crumpled and dropped right on Ralph. First time in 70+ years of hunting. www.drydock516.com

First time in 70+ years of hunting. I had one hit in my lap in a layout blind 3 or 4 years ago. There's no getting out of the way. you just hope they don't have a broken wing bone sticking out. I couldn't believe how hard it hit. It bruised my thigh through a pair of thick coveralls. It felt like 50 pounds when it hit. I think the mass will hold up North of I-70. We may have a few push on down, but I think it will still take another round of snow on top of what already fell in North Missouri. I hope the Christmas day system develops right. It could get really good if it does.
Flatbottom Boy Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Hey Gilly I used to live up in Omaha years ago and had a blind over in the Honey Creek, IA area. Ralph is a legend up there. Have you read his book, Born to Hunt? It's worth your time if you get the chance.
Gilly Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 No, haven't read his book. His hunting operation is on the Nebraska side of the river. My cabin is downriver from him about six miles and on the Iowa side. Get's frustrating sometimes because the Nebraska season is usually earlier and runs longer than Iowa. I would bet your HoneyCreek spot was 10' underwater when the Corp flooded the area a couple seasons ago. www.drydock516.com
Flatbottom Boy Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 Yes it was, my family was still hunting there and they lost two pit blinds. They were not complaining considering what everyone else lost though. Im not sure if they hunted it this year or got out of the whole deal, since most of us "kids" moved on it was only a couple of the old timers just using it to get out of the house. I would like to spend some time next year chasing pheasants and ducks, I miss hunting the way I did growing up. Now that we are stationed a little closer to home that will be possible. I hope the ice is thick this next couple weeks I will be in town visiting family, hopefully pull some big slabs through the ice at some of my old stomping grounds.
