But isn't that now a right? Rights before life or life before rights?

They only thing I see that is an error in you post JD is that the Colt 1911 and 1911A1 weren't just used by the military they were developed for the military. The replaced the S&W revolver in 38 spec. I can also tell you that outside of qualifying, more rounds were and probably still, put through Colt 45's in competitive target shooting than anything else. During my time on an Air Force team I logged more than a 100K myself in competition and practice.

It seems that if common sense were added to the equation it is obvious given the ratio of gun ownership to misuse that guns aren't the primary problem. If we were to rid the population of guns they would become just like drugs, and we all know how successful the eradication of them has been. There is an obvious alternative, imprisonment for criminals and solid control of mentally ill individuals with tendencies to kill. Given the extremely low number of mass killings and the long time spans between attacks there should be plenty of time to identify and act.

It's hard for me to believe that with today's technology the authorities can't monitor potentially dangerous mental cases.

Think of all the rights we gave up after 9/11 due to criminals and mentally disturbed people, unfortunately it happens in lots of different ways in an effort to protect our citizens. My kids have to take off their shoes to get on an airplane, seems crazy, but just something we have to do thanks to criminals.

Justin, I said it back then and I say it now, giving up freedom and rights because of criminal is stupid. Yes security did need to be tightened but when you read or see on tv people still getting on planes with knives and other items supposibly banned it makes you ask why. I have a friend that got on a plane with a kimber 45 in a pelican case in his carry-on and got off the plane with it. When he got off he was met by TSA and went through the BS but i call that to little to late he already made the flight.

The people of this nation and our polticians seem to have lost their fricken minds. Getting hurt growing up was a fact, Criminals were a fact and mentally ill people were a fact. The only thing that IMO has changed is the Media Coverage thats spreads fear to every Sheep in the flock. Im not saying the media is a big evil but im saying why does a mentally disturbed person who committed a horrible crime in Conn need to affect the entire Nation? Use to be you might here about it on the evening news the night it happened and maybe a follow up late but never weeks on end. People also knew it was Isolated and really still is, not like people everyplace are running around shooting large numbers of people.

I don't think we gave up a lot of rights. It's true that the FBI did get some leeway on some things, but they are still required to justify them.

I don't think keeping your shoes on is a right. If they're like most kids you probably have trouble getting them to keep their shoes on in the summer.
