Yesterdays nice weather had me thinking about shallow mud bottomed coves and carp cruising around in search of a meal. I didn't expect to see anything honestly , but I surprised myself and had shots at 5 different fish. As you can tell from the post title , it didn't go so well for me.

Still enjoyed the challenge and spending a few hours at the lake with my best buddy.

Very interesting. I realize that the carp prefer cooler water, but I'm surprised they would be actively feeding in shallow water now. Do you think the sun drew them up?

A friend of mine that lives near Truman called a couple of weeks ago and was catching catfisonion 10' of water in the backs of coves. I thought that was really early.

I'm pretty sure the warming water in the backs of that shallow cove is what got them active. Like I said , the very next day under cloudy, cooler conditions there wasn't a fish to be seen. I know they were eating something because I watched several fish tailing around in the mud , now I just have to figure out exactly what and try and match it with my fly for next time. You can bet I'll be getting out and checking on the situation a little more often on those warm sunny days.

Given their activity i would guess some kind of bug. I'm a want-a-be carp fishermen, but I was kind of under the impression that if they were feeding they would generally take anything they thought was food?

I've seen it both ways. Sometimes they inhale the first thing you plop down in front of their nose like they havn't eaten in a week...and other times they can be the most discriminating species I've ever had the pleasure to chase. Just ask anyone who's done much flyrodding for carp and you're sure to hear about both kinds of days in equal measure.

Yeah I might have to take a ride down to the Pothole and look closer.

I'm still looking for my first carp on a fly. Sad face.
