Members 3inonegod Posted February 23, 2013 Author Members Posted February 23, 2013 I have my set up ready for spring. I have 6 rods. Most are the Skeete Reece rods. I decided to go with his flippin/pitchen rod. It is a 8' rod with regular (not micro) guides. Baitcasters: Skeete Reece top water with Johnny Morris 6.4 (14# mono) Skeete Reece crankbait with Johnny Morris 7.1 (10# fluro) Skeete Reece Flippin/pitchin with Johnny Morris 7.1 (10# fluro) Falcon Eaking Jig with Johnny morris 7.1 (10# fluro) Spinning 2 Skeete Reece shaky head with shamano reels (6# fluro) I will be down 4/12-4/15 with my brother and may ask for specific at that time. I have a serious case of cabin fever. Thanks all for your input...

Bill Babler Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Ouestion? Why did you go with the Johnny Morris Reels? Those things weigh a ton at 8.6 oz. Why in the world would you not go with the Lews? Completely different animal for just about the same money and you have lopped off about 1/2 the weight and came up so far in quality it is uncompareable. At least tell me you bought the reels at the outlet. There were at least a 100 of them over there the other day. Sounds like you did well on the rods. I have a buddy that loves his Reese Rods. Good Luck http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com

I thought the same thing. At 8 ft. you put a big heft as is natural and that 10 pound carbon will snap like 4 pound. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
dtrs5kprs Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 Those Skeet rods are pretty nice for guys who are hard on equipment. Not for me due to the weight, but not at all badly built, and decently priced. Would be nice sticks if you fished Truman a bunch. An eight footer is definitely a true flip rod, and then some.
ozarkgunner Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Bill, have you gone to Lews over the shimanos ? Angler At Law
Members 3inonegod Posted February 25, 2013 Author Members Posted February 25, 2013 Beleive it or not I bought a abu revo around Christmas and took it out once. The gears sounded horrible and I back lashed it 3 times. I have always used Johnny Mo's and can fish one of them all day w/o a back lash. I got each of his top of the line reels for about $100. The revo was much lighter but I did not like it. I bought the skeete reece because I have a place at the lake of the ozarks and will be using much larger line with it. The above list was for what I would use at the Rock. At the Rock would you use thicker line for flipping docks? Thanks, David

At the Rock would you use thicker line for flipping docks? Thanks, David I do flip/pitch little jigs on 10# fluoro, but with much less rod. More in the 6'6" to 7' range, and a "soft tip" MH. Like your Eakins stick. Mostly 15# fluoro around docks when flipping heavier jigs or flipping spoons in the slips. Will occasionally go up to 20# if there is color, or if it is more of a reaction deal vs. soaking it on the bottom after pitching it into the slip. Even on TR with clear water those fish around the docks can be pretty comfortable if there is a reason for it (bait, wind, bright sun and shadow from the dock, etc). Usually flipping a 3/4oz FB jig or a white spoon looking for reaction bites. Using a 7' SCV Legend Extreme for most of the jig work, just because it is the rod I keep a FB jig tied to. Using a little less rod for the spoon to keep from shattering a blank when it snaps home in a cable. Less in terms of power and modulus. With your rigs, a nice compromise would be some 12#/15# fluoro on the Falcon Eakins rod. Better yet, when on TR try to find them somewhere besides in the docks . There are for sure fish in and around docks, but not like at LOZ, and there are way better places to catch them. Seems like the dock fish at TR are less consistent, and much more dependent on knowing a few particular docks, vs. being able to run a dock pattern at LOZ. If we get some water there are also more fun places to flip than docks...bushes, trash in notches, etc. Need some serious rain though for that to matter. Am with you on the Revos. Owned one (gift) for all of one day. Did not like the feel out of the box, took it back to BPS plus some cash for a Calais. The Calais is about the last reel without the lowered gear box. Strangely, the cheap-o Silver Max is a pretty nice reel for the $. Picked one up for my daughter to play with last summer, and have considered buying a couple more. Feels better to me than any of the Revos. Have been using hers all winter for a test reel while building some rods, and have not felt any worse about it.
riverfish Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 the abu garcia line of max's black, silver, and pro are the same thing as the higher end of revos they say the higher end are different but other than the gear ratios they are the same i have a dozen of them a few of all three and i love them by buddy bought all the hegher end and has me clean and lubel them for him i can litterally switch out the bearings and gears from one to the other and they are all the same it really is a lot of bang for your buck
wdberkley Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 It's not the lightest setup by any means, but I flip with a GLoomis GLX BCR875 and a 7.1:1 Daiwa Lexa 300. The Lexa is pretty beefy at 10.5oz, but it packs 22lbs of drag power. Between that and the power the rod provides, it's a pretty solid rig for junk fishin'. And to my surprise, the rod (which is 7'-3" & Mag Heavy) is incredibly sensitive.
