chris3179 Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Chris here is the really cool thing. Using google earth and my waypoints I have been able to mark out tons of spots that will never show on any lake map. For instance I have on little boulder its only 5sq ft of mass and 10inches tall but when the waters right and time is right I have pulled as many as 20 walleye off it, another is a stump only one in the area and its a big one, it almost always produces a catfish. Those simple little things mean a lot to fish and because of that mean a lot to me I have a google earth picture that looks like it has the worse case of chickenpox lol. I use landmarks and then the measure tool from google to almost exactly plot those spots. A long way from old topo charts and guess a spot. Im working on an article right now for the way I troll but might take a some time, but ill post it when i get done. Hmmm (way over my head at the moment, but i am willing)...................... After reading all you do to find a spot for fish, my attempts seem lacking to say the least. So first order of business is to get hds 5 and structure scan, then get back on water, then bug you a hell of alot more.
Jeff Olson Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 hey f&f, thanks for the great info! looks like your water temps are in the upper 40's, what speed do you troll those flickers at this time of year? I want to try bull shoals here soon, and have not fished it this early before.
Feathers and Fins Posted February 19, 2013 Author Posted February 19, 2013 2.1 to 2.3 mph when im bumping shallow water 6 to 15 fow, 20+ fow the sweet spot seems to be 1.8 to 2.0. Side note; I am kicking myself in the rear for not having the shotgun Sunday, I ran into several groups of whitey that let me get closer than the dark ones do grrrrr https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
npierceuark Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 I took the canoe out on Saturday up the white arm and got within 20 yards of a couple groups of honkers. If I didn't have all my duck gear packed up, cleaned, and organized I would be out there stacking some of those guys. Saw quite a few on the water around prairie creek sunday as well. Seems like they need some education F&F haha
Feathers and Fins Posted February 19, 2013 Author Posted February 19, 2013 LOL honker is closed Whitey is in the CO and they would have been waterswatted, actually though at first they were gulls then when i got close i started cussing myself out. If I go this weekend the bangstick and the extended tube will be on the boat just in case First time in a few years i saw snows actually roosting on the lake and dumb things let me get to within 20yrds a group of about 500 and at that range I could have helped conserve to Tundra nicely. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Jeff Olson Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 thanks Scott , and wow ! you got that close to that many snows ! they don't know how lucky they were do they ! lol . have a good day.
npierceuark Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Yep I guess January got away from me haha. probably a good thing a packed up all my stuff after duck season. You like eating those sky carp? I've never tried any and the only ones I ever I shot, I sent home with my cousin.
Feathers and Fins Posted February 19, 2013 Author Posted February 19, 2013 They are better than Honker and just slightly less than Speck. in other words YES i like eating them. they got a bad name from either someone who knows how good they are or someone who doesnt know how to cook. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
npierceuark Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Good to know. I tried a new duck recipe this fall that I really liked and thought it'd probably work well for geese too. Cut the meat into thin strips (fajita style) and lightly cover with bread crumbs and lemon pepper. Then flash fry with really hot oil ( I did 435) until light brown (usually only a minute or two depending on the thinckness of the strips and breading) then immediately spread them out on a rack or pan with paper towel to get extra oil off. Very crispy, flavorful bites that aren't shoe leather and dip them in a spicy mayo sauce. Dang I miss duck season already, only 9 months to go haha.
Jeff Olson Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 that sounds tasty !, if you ever get into the snows where you have a pile of meat, take them to your favorite processer and get brats and or sausage made. some of the best brats and sausage I have ever had ! I hope to be getting enough for a batch here soon!
