Members sitting fishing Posted February 18, 2013 Members Posted February 18, 2013 i'm looking to put together a heavier catfish rig with a used ambassador{bait casting} reel and need to know which models have a clicker thanks in advance Leo
Wayne SW/MO Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Some of the 5000's all the way up to the 6500 in the cat size. I bought two off of Ebay because my ancient 5000 didn't have the capacity I thought I needed. I answered to question of a clicker by looking close at the pictures. I think I paid about $50 a piece for them and they were both in excellent condition. I used the pictures to confirm condition also, some listed as very good had a lot of scratches and dings. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Al Agnew Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 The old green 5000 D was the best catfishing reel I ever used. It was a direct drive retrieve, which meant that you cast using the free spool button, but when you turned the handle to engage the gears at the end of the cast, you could pull line out and the handle would turn backwards. You could set the drag so that it took more or less force to pay out line and turn the handle, including setting it very light, so that even a gentle bite would allow the line to pay out. It also had a clicker, so you could set the drag to pay out line with very light pressure, and the clicker would sound off when a fish took line. But since it was a direct drive reel, you held the handle to set the hook and then played the fish by back-reeling if you needed to give it line. I've still got two of them, and in the rare times these days when I fish for winter walleye with live minnows, I use them.
Jerry Rapp Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I had a green 5000D back in the day(mid 70's). Caught some really good bass on that old winch. The only bass I ever got mounted, 7lb 3 oz, came on that reel out of Bismarck Lake. I remember using the reel on a 5 1/2 foot Herter's pool stick that dad wrapped.
Mitch f Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I consider Ambassadeur the best all around bait caster reel before the Shimano Curado came around. It was very rugged and sturdy and took a lickin and still kept on tickin. It still has many great applications as others have said, especially when line capacity May be an issue. I know the striper guys love them as we'll as the cat fishermen. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
