Members Tyler Davis Posted February 20, 2013 Members Posted February 20, 2013 Hello, I work for Mizzou in Columbia and we need Gar immediately or as quickly as possible. We need gar that we can work with in the lab. If you have any info into where I could find some that would be great. Either a local fishfarm or a local dealer.
fishinwrench Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 "A dealer" LOL I take it that you're not there on a scholarship. J/K Wait, did you say that you "teach" ? Yikes! I think you're gonna hafta wait til it warms up a bit, Professor.
Kayser Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Don't think he's teaching- most likely working on an experiment as a paid lab tech for the university. Your best bet would be to go to Jeff City (or nearby) on the MO River and ask around for a commercial fisherman. When you find one, get in contact with them and ask about acquiring some live gar. This shouldn't be too hard if you're willing to drive. Gar are kinda plentiful, and very hardy, so they should be in good shape if the fisherman has a stock tank to keep them in. Good luck. WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
fishinwrench Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Commercial fishing has been banned on the Mo. river for 20 years or so. May be some comm.fishing still being done on the Illinois side of the Miss. But I doubt they are getting many gar right now.
Greasy B Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Gar would be considered bycatch. If it's not worth a couple of bucks don't know why a fishermen would haul it so shore. No? fishinwrench Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Exactly. And whoever in the biology department ordered TD to go out and find them some gar in February was probably either "not too hip on biology" or was playing a practical joke on him. LOL If that's not the case then maybe they'll send him on a paid vacation to Louisiana for a week or two. Have fun/ take pics!
Greasy B Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 The best bet to acquire a live specimen would be to find someone knowledgeable, inquire as to the best time to catch one, humbly ask for assistance and offer a 12 pack and maybe a fine cigar to complete the task. Wayne SW/MO Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I don't think it would be as easy as obtaining a gar, sounds like he needs more than one. Sounds like a snipe hunt. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
fishinwrench Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I told the boy in a previous thread that I could load him up come April. But I'm pretty sure that unless he wants to head South before then he's SOL.
