Forsythian Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Hey Folks, I'm in the market for a new reel, and I can't imagine a better collection of fly fishing geeks to draw advice from. This'll go on a 8 1/2 foot 5wt Winston WT rod, and I have no more than $150 allowance for the reel... Unless something really blows me away... I'm trying to be earnest here, so please don't tempt me. I've kind of narrowed it down to a Lamson Konic, or an Allen Trout II, but there might be others worth looking at. I haven't seen any reviews on the Allen, but I think that burnt orange would look awful good attached to Winston green. Not sure if Mrs. Forsythian would agree, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. After that, I'll be shopping for some line worthy of this rig. After that, a decent couch to sleep on Thanky Cenosillicaphobiac
Lancer09 Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I've heard nothing but good things about the Allens, But it's hard to beat the Lamson Either. I saw of FB Wise just picked up an Allen, if he doesn't respond shoot him a PM and see what he thinks of it.
Brian Wise Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I saw of FB Wise just picked up an Allen HE DID!! I got the Alpha III though. They are really sexy reels, and I am still surprised how smooth (and STOUT) the drag is. Sure, I got the bigger game reel but it will go from total free-spool all the way to so tight that you cannot pull line at all.......all in once-click intervals. That is the meaning of awesome drag, and it is sealed. I will say that it is a little too quiet for my taste, I really like the sound of a sweet sounding reel as line is peeling off but I can deal with it being so quiet when it looks like this:http://cdn2.bigcommerce.com/server4600/cb329/products/213/images/827/_DSC1858__17642.1360081267.1280.1280.jpg My Youtube Channel
fishinwrench Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Good lord that's obnoxious! Is there a particular buff you we're given for Christmas that you're trying to compliment.....or WHAT?
Members stlskyline Posted February 21, 2013 Members Posted February 21, 2013 http://www.theflyfishingforum.com/forums/general-discussion/296716-allen-alpha-2-vs-lamson-konic.html .... For some reason it won't go to a link. I follow The Fly Fishing Forum and there was a long thread about the two. Search forum for Allen trout reel. Hopefully this helps sorry I could not get it as a link....
rfd515 Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 The one thing I'd verify is if they have a warranty. Looking on their site I don't see one but I could be glancing right over it.

Forsythian Posted February 21, 2013 Author Posted February 21, 2013 Thanks for the link stlskyline, it looks like folks are pretty happy with Allen's customer service. It also seems like the Allen is bit more sturdy (?) I don't guess either reel would withstand the underwater Ness treatment ;-) Cenosillicaphobiac
