Members Stu675 Posted March 6, 2013 Members Posted March 6, 2013 I am not thrilled on a crowded day for sure but if you time it right you can always find some good water that's not to crowded. I have been going to Bennet since I was 12 and will be 66 this month so I guess it is more tradition than anything. My family had many camping trips to Bennett and Roaring River and they will always be a slice of paradise in my book. For a 3 hour drive I love to be able to try out some new flys I just tied and just get away. On the drive down form Kansas City when I dip down into the valley by Sands Springs resort I'm suddenly 12 again with all the anticipation of catching a lunker that day. Sounds corney but that's the way it feels. Long live the Trout Parks! I totally agree, I guess I was just talking mainly on the opening day/week when it is just to crowded for my taste (typically), I also love that area, sometimes in the spring and summer I will even ride the motorcycle to go fishing down that way. I am just not a big fan of having people around me when fishing for some reason, and honestly I love going there during the C&R season, being so close and it makes for an easy day trip.
mic Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 It seems to me to be similar to the difference between firearms deer season and bow season: Firearms Deer Season involves a little hunting, a little card playing, a little washer playing and a little beer drinking with guys you don't get to see often enough. Bow Season is hunting and solitude. We can enjoy both, you know. Dave, Very well said.
Wayne SW/MO Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 The trout parks shouldn't be criticized for the fishing environment, simply because they are what they are. There is no other way to create a put and take coldwater fishery with virtually unlimited access in Missouri. They crowds have probably just about maxed out and with the loss of good fishing water due to filling in, some days will be frustrating to some. I can criticize the changes done to Bennett, and I have, quite often. The changes to Roaring River have improved it. Removing the lake and adding a C&R area were good for the park. Different superintendents with different goals. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
rcguy Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Pat, I'm soo sorry to hear about your leg or foot!! I guess that new ramp will come in handy! I hope it heals soon and you can be back in form. I read on the Weavers Facebook page the other day that they are planning on building fish cleaning stations at Bennett. I was thinking the other day about avoiding the Bennett crowds and I think the best ways are: Go during a week day. Don't go early in the morning. Wait unitl people give up and go to breakfast. ( I say this but the last time I was down I could not sleep and was the first one in the parking lot by the island) ( I did get the spot I wanted but it wasn't really crowded anyway) As you are fishing start screaming and yelling about a water moccasin you just saw. That might make you a little more room. : )

When I get back into KC I was planning on making a trip somewhere, depending on the weather I may ride down to Bennett during the week. Would be a nice ride and get some fishing in. Need to test my new Flying Pig rod out
Members Stu675 Posted March 7, 2013 Members Posted March 7, 2013 Also the snake thing reminds me of when I went down in Jan and had a muskrat swimming around me, little guy never bothered me, but came pretty close to me, so I kept my eye on him, but he was funny to watch swimming around.
brittsnbirds Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 As far as the handicapped access goes, I haven't noticed anyone that were very rude to "actual" handicapped people. The ones that I can't stand are the ones that get around perfectly fine, drag their lawn chairs buckets and long nets down and take over the access. If you can carry your own gear then down hog up the handicapped! if you want to bank fish go down to zone 3 or the river. Yea, Jerry the toughest part will be if I can actually hook up the trailer and drive down that far. It was my right leg. Plus I'm out on w. c. and dont think they would appreciate me doing that on their time. I wouldn't chance it. If I feel that good I could at least ride a desk. Going to the Dr. a week from today to get my staples out and 1st cast off. Then we will see if it's going to be 8 or 12 weeks!! However I think cool, spring mineral water would be good on it!! Get NoLuck to pack me on his back to the stream. You can prop me up on the bank and "bam" I'm in business! Send me an email and I will send you some nasty pics!
NoLuck Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 NoLuck has been packin enough around Hoover Dam the last couple months, but if you want I can get a wheelchair and roll you off in the stream. LOL
Wayne SW/MO Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 We were at hoover a couple of years ago and the most impressive thing were the bighorns, desert?, sheep we saw. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
