Anyone start their seeds yet? Most of you probably started them weeks ago, but here in central Illinois yesterday was my seed starting day. Yea, spring is just around the corner!

I just buy plants at the local produce shop. I don't have a good spot to start plants from seed.

Normally by this time I have lettuce and radishes out in the raised beds, but I have not gotten that far this year. It snowed all day yesterday.

Next weekend looks nice, might have to take a float.

I started some on 2-13,they are ranging from 1 to 5 inches now. im from WI, and this will be my first year trying to plant some veggies down here, with all this rock, I think I am going to try to do most in containers. I think I better check some old threads for tips for this area as the soil is lot different!

Containers have worked great for us for Gipsy, Bell and Bannana peppers, Roma and grape tommatoes, Leaf Lettuce Strawberries and Herbs. You just need to have quality soil and keep them watered. I still put cucumbers and Snap peas in the ground.

I started my seeds last year on valentines day under a 4ft shoplight on a timer and it worked great. When it was warm enough to plant them, they were huge.I need to get mine started this week. Our cherry tomatos were a little bit smaller than golf balls. The vines were about 15-20ft long and grew under all of the other plants and made a tangled mess.Girlfriend found it was easier to can the cherry tomatos,When the skins cracked after dipping them in ice water ,just squeeze them out.No cutting. Were gonna do 2-3 big slicing maters and a bunch of cherry tomatos for canning this year.2 cantelope 2honeydew,pickles on the fence,cucumbers,squash/zuccs and a bunch of huge stuffed/grilled/wrapped jalepenos.Everything else we will get from the farmers market and grocerystore.Weve never canned greenbeans so were trying to figure how big of an area we will need to get enough beans for 2 adults and 3 kids.Does anybody know how long seeds will last?Has anybody planted old seeds?I found a big box of different seeds.I might find a different area and plant them and see if they grow.If they dont i will just mow them over.We have some 5gallon bucket containers with regular cherry tomatos that we grow on the patio that do pretty good if we keep them out of the hot sun. They usually keep growing long after the garden is done.

I hope all this snow melts.I cant wait.

Yeah, I've got most of my stuff started in the basement. I kinda stagger them out based on where I want them when it's time to plant. Peppers, maters, herbs, onions started back in January. Followed up with some Alpine strawberries, annual flowers, ground cherries. Will start lettuce, cabbage, this week.

blue79: Seeds will last for more than the current year depending on how they're stored, what kind they are, etc. Cool and dry conditions are the best. Some of my starts this year are 3 year old seed.

I'd do a germination test on the old stuff you're interested in trying: wet a folded paper towel, lay out a bunch of seeds, fold it over and place in a sealed baggie. Keep in a warm place -- I use the back of my shop lights over the ballast. Check every couple days and see what happens. Some will naturally sprout fast, some slow so be patient. If you catch them just as they sprout, but before a root gets into the paper towel, you can gently transfer those to some seed starting material.

Kinda depends on the seeds. If it was a cache from grandpa, I'd do about whatever I could to get them going. If it's an old box of my stuff I forgot about, well...

I live in Shawnee and work in Grandview, so I know both areas pretty well.
