Members Saltydawg Posted March 7, 2013 Members Posted March 7, 2013 I am a fly fishing novice. I have only targeted trout in the past. Would like to get into some white bass, walleye,, crappie this spring. I have a 5 wt fly rod and regular floating line. Can someone recommend a set up for white bass fishing on the fly. Would a 5 weight rod be too light? Fly selections? Line ? Leader ? Would there be a place in sgf that could help set up my rod/reel. Does anyone go to Little Sac who could show me a few things, swap a beer ? Thanks !

Wayne SW/MO Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 You should be fine with a 5wt. If you don't tie try a chartreuse clouser, and if that doesn't work go home when you get tired. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

I find that funny! Sometimes I forget to go home when Im fishing. A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
fishinwrench Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 If you get hopelessly addicted to chasing whites on the fly you'll find yourself wanting a 6-7wt. Pretty soon, but you can certainly catch a few with a 5wt. and a few #6 Clousers.
dennis boatman Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 below Taylor Bridge would be a good place to start...in a few weeks... A strike indicator is just a bobber...
Members Nightbrew Posted March 11, 2013 Members Posted March 11, 2013 If you need any help with getting things set up you can always swing by plateau fly shop in springfield. Those guys are helpful and chase not trout species frequently.
Jason R. Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 My favorite setup is my 7wt with a slow full sinking line- 1fps- but a 5wt will work. All you need are a few clousers- but "jiggies" work well and so do almost all small baitfish patterns. You can catch them on a popper sometimes when they are feeling frisky. Successful clouser colors= grey over white, chart. over white, plain white- etc. Make sure your clouser has just a little flash in it. Cant wait for white bass- coming up quick. http://flyinthesouth.com/
