Walleye Help Needed.....please

Big Keene

Recommended Posts

My brother and i are gonna be on Stockton the second weekend in april. We will be fishing out of Orleans Trail. Our target is as many walleye(1st priority) and crappie fillets as we can get in 2 hopefully 3 days of fishing. Experienced with bass and crappie fishing, but rookies with the Eye's. Any advice, as detailed as you care to be:) would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I usually pick up the walleye as bonus fish while fishing for crappie. Last year, the end of March, and 1st two weeks of April were just fantastic for the walleyes and crappie on the Sons Creek arm. Fishing the flats in 5-7 feet of water and shallow timber with swimming minnows and bobby garland grubs on 1/16th oz jig heads would normally produce a limit of walleyes and crappie.

when fishing the grubs and swimming minnows, do you bounce them off the bottom or cast and retrieve? Also, do the;y hit crank and stickbaits that time of the year? So many questions, and all i really know about walleye is that they are delicious fried.

That time of year you can catch them on just about anything. Jig and minnow always works well, and you'll get your crappie to. If the water is 60 or more trolling crank baits works well to. Troll 1.5to2mph in 10-25ft of water and you'll catch walleye.

Good luck

Dang meat (walleye) hunters! Lol! Anyway, all good advice. Also might try bottom bouncing a crawler harness or slow death rig in 10-20 feet of water, .8 to 1.2 mph or so. The fish will tell you how fast and how deep to fish. Same with your grubs and swimming minnows, try different depths and retrieves until the fish tell you how they want it. You should be able to find walleye near Orleans Trail. Have fun!

Walleyedmike, as a bass fisherman, i can respect the catch and release mindset, but...if they didnt want us to eat the walleye, why i ask are they so darn tasty? and i have fished with my brother long enough to know that we are a MINIMAL threat to ANY fish population. LOL! Thanks all for the pointers. would the same sort of tactics worked if we switched up and fished out of Mutton Creek?

I cant wait to get back, we havnt been on stockton in over a year, and i love that lake.

Just giving you a hard time BK. The good lord put all kinds of fish in the water for us to eat! Same tactics will work out of Mutton. I often troll the east bank from Mutton to the mile long bridge. Really haven't fished much south of Mutton, don't know why, it looks like it should be good.

BTW, WalleyedMike, i looked into those slow death rigs and immediately ordered some. they look...well...deadly. ive never fished a spinner rig/crawler harness/bottom bouncer before. do you drift, electric motor, or troll with the gas motor? do the walleye tend to be more scattered as far as depth is concerned, or do they tend to concentrate in one particular depth? And do the crappie move up shallow that early in April on stockton? sorry for the 20 questions, this might be my only chance to fish stockton this year, and i would love to go into it as armed as possible.

Slow death works best between .7 mph and 1.4 mph.

I drift and use electric to reach that speed.

Find the depth and speed and stick to it over different locations.

Second weekend in April may be a bit April for crappie on the bank but you will need to try this for yourself.
