jbtiwns30 Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 I only fished this lake for one year and i do have to say that there are tons of bass in here and crappie as well. The crappie population doesnt compare to fellows though. But when you catch crappies out this lake they normally are bigger then what you catch at fellows. I can catch my limit at fellows but they range from 10 to 13inches. At springfield lake i can catch my limit and the size range has been 12 to 19 1/2 inches. The secret at this lake is the crappies love to be in current but not to strong and the greener the water the better the fishing is for them.
aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 any pics of the 19 1/2? that would be a record
Patrick M Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Here is the biggest crappie i have caught in Lake Springfield it was in July 2011. there are a lot of crappie out there i have seen them caught.
jbtiwns30 Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 I have two pics if it but they are on my memory card at the taxidermy since he is making a replica one..... i couldnt keep and eat that one.
MSUFisherBear Posted April 15, 2013 Author Posted April 15, 2013 No I read you loud and clear. I was just fishing the otherday and came across two guys in a kayaks doing fairly well. Just thought I would say hello to ya if that was you, but guess not. I usually am in a 14' jon Oh gotchya! If you see me, let me know. Mine a little red 8'er. I usually hang around the bluff area. Give me a shout when your down! There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind. ~Washington Irving
MSUFisherBear Posted April 15, 2013 Author Posted April 15, 2013 Dang! Those are some nice crappie. Maybe I'm not going about it the right way. I jig fish and have even thrown a few spinnerbaits, but all I can catch is bass (not a problem that I necessarily hate) :-P There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind. ~Washington Irving
luckycraft Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Oh gotchya! If you see me, let me know. Mine a little red 8'er. I usually hang around the bluff area. Give me a shout when your down! Will do, I haven't been out there for a while I usually start fishing in the bluff area and head into the main lake. Will hollar at you if i'm heading out there.
MSUFisherBear Posted April 16, 2013 Author Posted April 16, 2013 luckycraft - Right on man. And for those of you with the crappie bite, I wanted to throw a couple of things out. When I say I fish with jigs, I usually use 1/16 ounce chart. or white roadrunner heads with a curl tail or Lake Fork swimmer (some of you may have seen these before, if not, they look somewhat like the old stubby butt grubs. If you still can't picture it, think of a tiny swimbait with a pin tail). I personally prefer colors of white, silver, black and silver, or red and silver. I will use some chart. or chart/white when the water gets a little murkier. I feel this plays on the healthy population of the threadfins. When using a spinnerbait, I stick to white or chartruse. Typically it's an 1/8 ounce with a very small willow blade (maybe #2 or #3, depending on the day). You don't have to tell me your secrets or colors, but is this similar to your lures, or am I off base? Also, any tips or retreives? Again, not looking for specifics on area, time of day, or even the exact colors or lures, just some ideas. There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind. ~Washington Irving
jbtiwns30 Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 Let me tell you this..... i use roadrunners all the time every place but this lake. I dont know why the crappies on this lake will not bite on road runners. The first time i started catching crappies out there i used a small white swim bait and was catching the crap out if them then i used a road runner same color... didnt catch one. Then i went back with this swim bait and started catching them again. I also use a small a-rig for crappies that also works really good. If you use that let it sink to the bottom and reel it in slow.
