Love 'em. My brother in law has a pond in his backyard that he built strictly as a swimming hole, so he didn't put any fish in it. The crawdads moved in, and with nothing to prey upon them they really thrived. We would get crawdad traps, the kind that just has a net that sits on the bottom and a hook above it that you can hang bait on. We had a half dozen traps, and we'd put them in at various places around the pond, and by the time we put the last one in, we'd go back to the first one and lift it up and have about two dozen crawdads in it. So we'd go around the pond lifting them up and have enough for about 25 people in a half hour or so. Problem was, though, that even with us having a crawdad boil about twice a month, they overpopulated, and now all you can get are crawdads up to about 2.5 inches, not hardly worth fooling with.

But we found a place on Kaskaskia Island that, when the river is at the right level, you can go and catch big ones by the hundreds. So now we still have crawdad boils a couple times a month throughout the summer.

I'm a tail and claw guy. Sucking heads is a bit much for me, and I want them out of a pond.

The big thing around here is to go snorkeling along the bases of seawalls. The undercut edges are loaded with crawdads, but I have this mental hangup about septic leakage under the seawalls. I get invited to a couple of neighborhood craw-beer parties prior to July 4th every year. Nobody has ever gotten ill (as far as I know) but I still refuse to eat the LO seawall dwelling lobsters.
