NoLuck Posted April 17, 2013 Author Posted April 17, 2013 Wayne, I'm with you on all accounts. Convenience is the major factor many people like Bennett. It's time that the so called caretakers leave things alone. If they care about anything other than$$$$$&$$ Pat, I'll post up the pics of my fish I catch on my flo pink brassie. That's the only fly I will use. LOL Maybe I'll sling a few kapoks if things get tough. Depending on water clarity I may toss a few olive midges or rusty midges. I'll let you know Rich
Wayne SW/MO Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Yeah they kind of exposed themselves in the Vogel's buy out. They said it was to give the park more river access and people assumed it was for them. Instead, in spite of hundreds of private livery canoes available, they decided to rent canoes. So instead of limiting future numbers of canoes available for rent, they joined and put the use of the riverfront to the exclusive use of launching their canoes. What good can be said of a government agency that goes in business in direct competition with private business. No you can't say that on here. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. grizzly Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 Wayne, I understand what you are saying. It is frustrating when a person in power prioritizes dollars over sense(had to sneak that in there) If you can, you should go to Montauk. It has a beautiful setting and you don't feel like the circus show is about to shoulder you out of your place. It seems like Montauk is the standard that the other parks should strive to reach: semi-natural with easy access. It also has the nice feature of no cell phone service, which is a definite plus for me Roaring is nice for what it is which to me is an easy access stream. Too crowded? Yes, but that should be expected. Bennett is just Bennett. Frustrating in that the gut hatch is major hatch of the day, and beautiful in its own right.
grizzly Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 Britts, you sum it up so nice. I hope that you do get up to the Firehole or Madison, they truly are national treasures. And I understand the friends aspect, as it is always nice to meet people who you have helped, and those who have helped you along the way. I guess a couple of summers ago I realized the quality that the trout parks bring to the table. It was hot and humid. I was at Roaring with my daughter and she was bored so I said that we should go down to the area they allow swimming in. I brought my rod so I could "fish" while I watched her. We were about 30 yards above the handicap access and my daughter met a few kids her age that were playing with an indicator in the riffle. Apparently the game was for one kid to drop the indicator in the river, and then all the other kids chase the indicator downstream and catch it before the indicator gets away. I saw the pure joy in the eyes of my daughter and those other kids, a piece of foam and a little bit of freedom went so far that day. Of course the indicator eventually made it down into that deep hole, so I sat on a rock, pulled a couple of thingamabobbers out of my vest and told them to have at it. They played for the next 45 minutes or so before tiring out. It was then that I realized that there is more to these parks than fishing. Fishing wise, I think I caught 1 or 2 fish. But I learned a lot from my young daughter that day. If I'm taking my kid, we go to Roaring River because of its proximity to Branson and the family atmosphere RR has. If I want to fish hard core, then I bust out the 6 weight and its off to Arkansas, or the 3 weight and time to hunt some trout in the Blue Ribbons.
XP 590 Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Fishing report, serioulsy.... in a daily stocked park?!?-- Just having fun, I've been going there since I was 10 years old and still enjoy it occaionally. Looking forward to taking my 8 year old Godson down next weekend for kids fishing day. I know it's a state park, I know it's a hatchery park, I know it's often crowded, but it still has a spot in my heart. We had an old 1959 Shasta camper at Weaver's since 1978 and just recently had to let it go, replacing it with a 1973 Holiday Rambler up next to Ollies. I've mostly moved on to other creeks and rivers, but it all started for me at Bennett. Regarding the hatches, the funniest thing I saw down there was the "Pellet Hatch". On a very rainy spring morning a few years ago, a buddy and I were at the very end of zone II and there was no one else in the stream. The water outside the hatchery literally started boiling. Apparently a huge wash of food pellets came through the hatchery outlet into the stream and it was on. This large, boiling patch of water moved slowly downstream and faded about 10 yards above us. Of course, being the observant,hi-tech, scientific fly fishermen we are, "we matched the hatch" with the little brown pellet fly and had a blast. (Go ahead-crucify me) There's a hatch you won't find on the Yellowstone!
Wayne SW/MO Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 The water outside the hatchery literally started boiling Funny you mention that. I can't count the times I've fished Bennett and a lot of it around the Long hole. Last year my son and GK's made a trip up there and I witnessed the phenomenon for the first time. I have to wonder what has changed to cause it because I know it hasn't always been there. Floating pellets, different feeding method, what? I don't think they were feeding floating pellets for one thing, but I'm not positive about that. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
