Troy Gregg Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 RS00765605, what kind of rpm's are you turning? Troy Gregg
Members kscullawl Posted April 24, 2013 Members Posted April 24, 2013 You haven't changed the weight in the boat have you? What you carry? Tackle etc? Kinda weird its wants to walk on you but lost speed. Typically chine walking is because there isn't much boat in the water allowing it to rock back and forth for various reasons. If you are running that much slower usually the boat is not lifting like it did and it will not walk as bad. So I would agree with the poster that said the cup affects speed. Esp those Tempest, the very end tip of those blades have the lift. As well as checking the hub. But I would look at the weight distribution as well. is one side heavier etc?
Members tpierce Posted April 24, 2013 Author Members Posted April 24, 2013 Weight distribution is the same. The wear is on the ends of the blades so that is what I'm thinking.
Members kscullawl Posted April 24, 2013 Members Posted April 24, 2013 I certainly would look at the jackplate closely too. That is one thing that could affect all the above in a short time.
fishinwrench Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Props - Now there is a sore subject for me. I run a 20' Skeeter with a 200 Yamaha. I cannot get this thing even close to doing what it is supposed to do. Every 3 blade prop I put on there throws an ear within 2 or 3 trips out. Some props run ok, and others run like crap. The best I've found is a 27-M, but I can't keep blades on it. Right now I am running a 4-blader which is WAY too small for my setup, but I just watch the RPM's and putt along about 58-60 with NO performance. I worked with John at Hot Props for quite a while and he can't get it. Matt at Dyna prop says I need a 26 Tempest, but it won't stay together either. And No, I'm not hitting anything either. I can throw a blade off a 3 blader in 100' ft of water within the 3rd or 4th run on that prop. Any ideas? I'm interested in this. You have thrown blades off how many props, without hitting anything? This is crazy. Gotta be more to this story... What year is the boat/motor ? I would expect it to turn a 24 tempest at 56-5800 wot, so what rpm were you getting with the 26 BEFORE it came undone?
Members Topwater TRL Posted April 24, 2013 Members Posted April 24, 2013 An easy way to tell if your hub is slipping is to clean off any black soot off the end of the prop shaft. Take a framing square and place the point of the square on the center of your prop shaft. Hold the square so it touches both inside edges of the prop. You are dividing the prop in half so to speak. Using a sharpie along the framing square, mark a straight line on top of your prop shaft and also mark your prop where the framing square touches the prop edges. Now go run your boat through the paces up to full throttle. After u load your boat out, place the framing square back on the end of the prop shaft and align it with the line you made. If your framing square also lines up with the marks you made on the prop edges, your hub is not slipping. This takes more time to describe than it takes to do. Hope that helps. Also, important to use a torque wrench and get your Merc prop nut to 100 ft. pounds as Merc flo torque hubs require. Topwater TRL

I am running a 99 Skeeter ZX202c with a stock 1999 Yamaha 200 vMax. Nothing fancy about it. I have a 12" jackplate which is standard on the ZX series. The best prop so far has been a 27-M. I ran 56-5700 and was in the upper 60's. Part of it is laying in about 100' of water in the mouth of Aunts Creek - 2nd trip. I got another one, ran great for 2 trips. 1 blade of it is laying in the bottom of Pomme de Terre lake in about 50' of water. I ran a 26 tempest, I could get 5600 out of it, 63 MPH. 1 blade of that prop is laying at the bottom of Bull Shoals somewhere around Tremble Creek - 1st trip out. The boat calls for a 25-M. I get 5800 and can run 63 with it. Its laying at the bottom of Pomme de Terre lake after the 3rd trip out. I have a 23p Stiletto 4-blade that has hundreds of miles on it. Not much performance there, I can turn 6000+ with it and still have some pedal left, but I'm only running 61mph or so. I tried a Michigan Wheel 25p last weekend, I could get 6000 with it, but only 55 MPH. Baffled yet?
GNSfishing Posted April 26, 2013 Posted April 26, 2013 Just a guess here, If you are surfacing a blade it will slap the water hard enough to eventually break a blade off. That big tall roster tail behind the boat looks impressive but is hard on props. You might check the height setting of the jack plate could be too high allowing trimming the motor too high. I have had a boat for 40 years and 3 have been what I considered performance bass boats ranging in hp. of 115, 150, & 225 and ran 3 & 4 blades and have never lost a blade from a prop. You have lost so many blades that it has got to be your engine setup.. Remember this is a guess on my part....One question are the props that have lost blades from new or rebuilds?? fishinwrench Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 Yeah. Perplexed. I've never been in a boat that threw a blade, I bet the vibration is intense, not to mention the sudden steering torque. Were these all fresh props or ones that had been rebuilt or tweaked ?
