stlfisher Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 I went once on a windy day and holy crap are you right. Do you catch them on the rip rap from the bank or are you out in a boat? We were on the rip rap. The bank on the left by the first parking spot. there are suppossed to be smallies in the lake...according to the sign at least, but we didn't have much luck on bass at all. there are hybrids, blue cats (say a guy with about 10lb'r), flatheads, gills, bass etc. the channels are all really small and your are encouraged to keep them or use them as bait is my understanding. my buddy was telling me boats sink often and people have died because of the wind...might be the windiest lake i have ever fished.
Greasy B Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 The only time I have been to Baldwin we pulled up to the ramp, took one look at the white caps, turned around and headed elsewhere. But as we all know places that are a pain in the butt to fish are often very good. His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. He becomes captain of the Greasy Bastard, a small ship carrying rubber goods between England and Burma. Michael Palin, Terry Jones, 1974
mic Posted May 3, 2013 Author Posted May 3, 2013 Thanks STL. Maybe we can find a calm day sometime and give it a try. First fish I ever caught on a fly rod was a three pound channel. That was a blast.
Kayser Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Baldwin lake has a lot of catfish in it, especially blue cats and baby channels. Use 8/0 circle hooks so the little channels can't get it in their mouths- the decent blues and flatheads will manage well enough. Had stretch in 2011- 3 days, over 300lbs of catfish kept, blues and flatheads. Threw back a lot of 3-6lb blues because I just didn't feel like cleaning them. Fish kills in the past two summers have depleted stocks, but the fish are still in there. Not like they were, but still there. WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
