Al Agnew Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 Mitch, I agree with you...more smallmouth than spotted bass, but there are some spotted bass genes in there. You almost have to compare it to "real" smallies to see the difference, but it's there. I'm thinking more like 7/8 smallmouth, 1/8 spot.
tjulianc Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 I'm thinking more like 7/8 smallmouth, 1/8 spot. So its an octoroon bass.
Tim Smith Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 What justifies the 1/8 spot? Mouth size? Hmmm. Seems like a hard call to make.
joeD Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 Uh huh. Thanks for the picture Mitch! Splendid! Glad to see it. Excellent question too. Kind of like George Clooney asking his buds, "Hey, should I go with the razor stubble and a Victoria Secret model, or, should I shave, slick my hair back and escort an unknown hot wench to my premier? Really, guys, tell me!" Just kidding. Nice fish. Smallmouth. If not, who cares. Still a nice fish that we didn't catch.
Mitch f Posted May 14, 2013 Author Posted May 14, 2013 What justifies the 1/8 spot? Mouth size? Hmmm. Seems like a hard call to make. I noticed something was different when it was being caught, just an instinct I guess. The scales above the lateral line have a more distinctive contrast around the border like a spot. As Greasy said, the mouth was slightly different than the other smallies we caught that day. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
