Mitch, I agree with you...more smallmouth than spotted bass, but there are some spotted bass genes in there. You almost have to compare it to "real" smallies to see the difference, but it's there. I'm thinking more like 7/8 smallmouth, 1/8 spot.

Uh huh. Thanks for the picture Mitch! Splendid! Glad to see it. Excellent question too. Kind of like George Clooney asking his buds, "Hey, should I go with the razor stubble and a Victoria Secret model, or, should I shave, slick my hair back and escort an unknown hot wench to my premier? Really, guys, tell me!"

Just kidding.

Nice fish. Smallmouth. If not, who cares. Still a nice fish that we didn't catch.

What justifies the 1/8 spot? Mouth size? Hmmm. Seems like a hard call to make.

I noticed something was different when it was being caught, just an instinct I guess. The scales above the lateral line have a more distinctive contrast around the border like a spot. As Greasy said, the mouth was slightly different than the other smallies we caught that day.
