DChance Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 found a handful of yellow close to my home and they were awesome but were starting to dry up. is the season done for now with this cold weather? or will the rain bring some more up?
bfishn Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 My old rule of thumb was when the last dogwood bloom fell, the morels were done. This year's weather has been so non-typical, it may be an exception. I found a few today, but they were all old, just well preserved by the cool & wet. I can't dance like I used to.
duckydoty Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 I've been finding some fresh ones still for the past 3 days. Every area, and every hill is different. A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
vonreed Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 I've been hunting Morels for years, since I could walk. It seems like every year is different to a certain degree. I do know that when warm weather hits and stays that they stop popping. This year has been the best year I've ever had. I found 4 pounds of fresh mushrooms today that weren't there 3 days ago. I also found yellow mushrooms a week ago that were completely dried out and rotten. I think this cool weather sticking around is making them continue to grow. It's also crossed my mind that maybe last years drought had something to do with it, or maybe all the rain and cool temps this year. I do know one thing though. Right now is the time to go find new spots. Right at the end of the season when the big mushrooms are popping is the time to go find a new spot. good luck.
jdmidwest Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 I still have dogwood blooms around here. Would probably have more if the rain hadn't pounded them off. Dogwoods were late this year and not very pretty, they were mostly green when they bloomed, the leaves hid the blooms. Usually the first spell of 70 to 80 degree weather kills it. I thought it was over a few weeks ago, the first bunch I found was yellows and they were dried out and crumbly on April 17. But they have still been popping up. A friend of mine found 18 lbs in the Leadbelt area yesterday, all nice ones. There should be more pop up this week if the sun ever comes out. DChance Posted May 6, 2013 Author Posted May 6, 2013 OK great I will go out and look some more. I haven't had a ton of luck but I just walk the creek by my house and have found a dozen or so doing this. I wish I could hit a load more of them.
