powerdive Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 I am an avid Walleye guy but I am from Northern Michigan so I am used to catching 5 - 8 lb walleyes as a norm and usualy once a month a 10 lber. These stocked eyes just are not the same. They still eat good but they fish bad. The Bluegills fight more. I am used to these... This ex-Wisconsinite agrees that it's hard to get excited about Stockton sometimes...but where you were catching smallies last week, you were within sight of some good walleye spots. And TR has a shot at giving up a 20+. Pounds, not inches.
packersooner Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Also got out on Tuesday mainly targeting walleye. We probably caught a dozen and a half or so with two limits. Most came on bottom bouncers. The biggest came on a deadsticked rod with a bottom bouncer/swimming minnow. They all came from rocky bluffs/points with bait on them in 18-22 fow. We did catch one of those goofy humpbacks...or whatever you want to call them. We then tried to solve the crappie puzzle in the afternoon. Managed 4 keepers and a handful of shorts in the Googer area. Caught one big female, but she was over a brushpile in 23 feet of water. She was still full of eggs. We tried areas from the banks out to 10 feet and notta. Found one cove with water temps in the low 60s. Interestingly, my partner caught a nice smallmouth bass in Googer. That was probably the biggest surprise of the day. He also caught one in the Mutton area. The only place I've caught them in the past is on the bluffs near the dam. BTW, I am also from Wisconsin (my profile name may have given that away). Unfortunately, I never got to do much walleye fishing up there. Jason
powerdive Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 BTW, I am also from Wisconsin (my profile name may have given that away). Jason I'm usually wearing a Packer hat of some sort on the water. If you see me, stop and say hi!! For the most part, around here, the only ones who actually fish for walleyes are the ones who talk funny (the northern transplants).
dennis boatman Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 ...I am yet to catch a crappie this year...however the Walleye bite has been the best I have seen...as you said, that 20' mark seems to be the place for the past 2 weeks...I caught 6 in less than 2 hours last night with 4 keepers...spinner rig and night crawler fished on a three way swivel... A strike indicator is just a bobber...
9LB Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 I might whine a bit but I will be back up to Stockton this weekend with my jig and crawler. I have heard of the big Table Rock Walleyes and I do plan to find them. I have 10 days straight on the Rock in June so I hope to figure them out. I grew up 70 miles from Green Bay in the Lynn Dickey and Dan the magic man Majkowski years way before Favre was around. Used to feeze my rear off at Lambeau and watch the pack get killed ! They only started wining after I moved.
packersooner Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Likewise PD. I either wear a camo Packer hat or an OU ballcap. 16' grey Lund. 9 LB...I grew up in the suburbs of Milwaukee (West Allis, New Berlin, Waukesha) during the dark years of the Packers. I remember the Lynn Dickey and magic man days all too well! Did you ever get to do any walleye fishing in Green Bay itself? It seems like once a year or so I catch a fishing show where they are trolling planer boards and tearing up the eyes. Hopefully you can get into them at TR. I haven't tried that walleye fishery. Usually drive past TR on the way to Bull Shoals. Jason
powerdive Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 I remember watching the Pack win the first two Super Bowls. Never missed a game on TV, except when I was in the service, or actually attending games. Geesh, they were lousy for a quarter century. Kinda like the Bears now. I hail from the Lake Geneva area. 9LB, I can point you toward some spots on TR when you're ready.
9LB Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 I love the cheeseheads. I am actually eatng some Kauakana Sharp Cheddar as I type. I used to fish the bay a lot with a friends father. We would catch enormous walleyes. When your young you just assume they are all that big ! I am from the Upper Penninsula of Michigan but only lived 90 miles north of green bay. We used to catch our big Walleyes on the Michigamme. I used to go to the Motorcross races at Lake Geneva that is the high roller area ! I am heading up this weekend. Next week on the Rock each night practicing for the KVD tourny. Good Luck
