Wayne SW/MO Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 Just curious, how many on here were Boy Scouts and what was your experience in regards to the outdoors and fishing? Was it part of your natural progression, or did it change your direction? Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
jeb Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 Who can say if it changed your natural direction? It seems like it was just part of the way I was headed anyway, but I'm sure the scouts did much to sharpen my love of the outdoors. John B 08 Skeeter SL210, 225F Yamaha
Al Agnew Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I was a Cub Scout, but didn't go any farther. I joined mainly to go on camping trips, but the scout leaders weren't much interested in that so we never did any of it. So I can say that it did absolutely nothing to turn me toward the outdoors, and if I would have let it would have turned me away instead. I found it to be a worthless experience. I've also seen some bad things, as far as the outdoors is concerned, with Boy Scout troops, including a bunch of them that went through a big cane patch on the Eleven Point whacking down every bit of cane, while the leaders sat in lawn chairs at the campsite and ignored them. So in my opinion, the organization itself can be good, bad, or indifferent, and it all depends upon what kind of adults are doing the supervising.
Jack Jones Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 Was a cub scout. Made it up to Webelos. Then quit because the other scouts were honestly a bit snotty. There were more affluent than I and made sure everyone knew it. So...I went and played in the woods and built fires without them. blue79 Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I couldnt join the boy scouts cause we were gone alot, but they had boyscout meetings at the church next door and me and my buddy always got in fights with a couple of the scouts(their fault).I wasnt a scout but ive allways fished and loved the outdoors. My friend was a scout and he never fishes, camps, look for morels, nothing outdoors.I dont think it does anything for you unless (you) make it happen.I think its just something to keep boys busy and out of trouble. When i got older i dated a girl that was a girl scout once.Does that count?
Flysmallie Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I wasn't a scout but I had an awesome dad that always took me fishing.
vonreed Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I grew up in the outdoors and was doing everything at an early age. When I was 10 I decided the Boy Scouts would be awesome so I joined. I had all kinds of dreams of the cool stuff we would do. The first day I attended all we did was sing and dance for 2 hours. I never went back. It was just a city folks way of pretending they were outdoorsmen.
Members MattS Posted May 20, 2013 Members Posted May 20, 2013 "Boy Scouts" around here is not outdoors at all. I did it for a year and went on a hike around my school and that was the only time we went outside
Justin Spencer Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I was not, but deal with lots of troops, some great, some horrible. Depends on troop leaders. Lancer09 Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I have my eagle, but didn't do a whole lot with my troop. I did plenty outdoors without them, they did everything to simply and I just felt like it held me back from what I wanted to do most of the time.
