bfishn Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Arkansas won't stock stripers in TR because it would ruin the Beaver tailwater trout fishery. They even hunt them down and return them when a few go over the spillway. I expect Mo would never stock them there in deference. They may look at BS a bit differently, with that trout fishery being distributed instead of concentrated. Won't really matter much though, the stripers will find them eventually (see Quachita). I can't dance like I used to.
Quillback Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Trolling isn't the only way to target the deeper offshore fish. Study the maps and get really friendly with your sonar. It takes a lot of confidence to camp on a spot in the middle and throw a C rig or jig as far as you can in open water and take 4-5 minutes (or longer) to get it back to the boat, but it works. Just because your reel has a crank handle doesn't mean you should spend the day turning it. I'm going to spend some more deep water time this year and I did do quite a bit of c-rigging and jigging last summer in the 20-25 foot depths. Haven't done much deep cranking however, but I'm planning on doing quite a bit this year. Did quite a bit of salmon trolling when I lived in the Pac NW, trolling with downriggers, 120-140 feet deep. Had some great days, I miss it.
FRENZEL Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Is Beaver being mentioned so much because as far as tournaments go it is the "striper" lake that TR beats in the Black bass? I would tend to argue with TR being superior to BS in the Largemouth category. Not saying this because I want em.. Heck I think that the high # of tournaments can do as much direct damage as limited Stripers would though. I'm fine with the lakes on either end getting em. Beaver and Bull are close enough. Feathers and Fins Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 Who knows Frenzel, could compare them to many lakes but the truth is each lake is different. I think its because it is what they know or are familiar with. If I was to compare TR to any lake it would be Dale Hollow and Beaver reminds me a lot of Lake Mead. But still comparing any lake to another is apples to oranges. Kinda like comparing the Gulf to the Atlantic they both are connected but both fish so differently. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Members james Posted May 27, 2013 Members Posted May 27, 2013 I also would argue that TR is superior to BS, well in any category, dont get me wrong i love TR, but i just spent 2 days on lower BS and with the amount of quality largemouth we caught in that short amount of time i dont think BS would play second fiddle to any lake in MO or AR,and most of the time i felt like i had the lake to myself i just dont get that alot on TR, and i might be wrong but i didnt see TR on the BM elite's schedule this year, but i guess feathers and fins is correct.....apples and oranges.
Wayne SW/MO Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 If you were around in the 50's you know that BS was a jewel and it wasn't really the fishing that pushed it back. Tr had 2 things going for it, Branson and a dependable level. Both were very challenging because they were so clear and that isn't what most dedicated bass fishermen were used to at the time. Then there's the state record. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Yeah the Elites were raving about BS last year, and I've heard that people say you can really get away from the crowds.
Wayne SW/MO Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 BS will always take more skill to fish because of the unstable levels. Fish on a 10' structure today might leave what's a 15' structure 2 weeks later. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
merc1997 Bo Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 they released stripers in bull shoals. there goes the fishery in bull shoals again. way back when they tried stripers in bull shoals the rest of the fishery went to nothing. they finally quit, and the stripers either got caught or died, and the fishery on bass and crappie came back. i do not know how they expect anything but the same result this time. bo
bfishn Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 MDC plans to stock 16,000 in June, split betwseen Forsythe and Theodosia. AGFC news release on it; Date 05/21/2013 Description BULL SHOALS – The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and the Missouri Department of Conservation jointly developed a proposal in 2010 to consider stocking striped bass in Bull Shoals Lake. The original proposal was to establish a trophy striped bass fishery by stocking 22,000 fingerling striped bass every other year, while maintaining other popular game fish populations. According to AGFC Chief of Fisheries Mark Oliver, the two agencies hosted a total of five public meetings in Missouri and Arkansas during 2011. Each agency also visited with numerous anglers in 2011-12. After the meetings and angler input, the AGFC decided not to pursue stocking striped bass in Bull Shoals Lake at that time. “We know that the low striped bass stocking rates outlined in the proposal would not negatively impact other popular game fish such as walleye and bass, but we did not receive an abundance of support for the proposal,” Oliver said. “Right now, anglers are experiencing some great fishing in Bull Shoals due to the high water from a few years ago. We will continue to monitor the fishery and may reconsider striped bass stockings at some point in the future,” Oliver added. Recently, MDC acquired striped bass with the intent to stock up to 16,000 fingerling striped bass in the Missouri portion of Bull Shoals Lake during 2013. The fish will be stocked without the support of the AGFC. “MDC has been a valuable partner on many cooperative Arkansas-Missouri projects, but we simply can’t agree that this stocking is the best course of action at this time based on the comments we have received from our anglers,” Oliver noted. I can't dance like I used to.
