Members kirbydog Posted May 27, 2013 Members Posted May 27, 2013 Was letting Pujols go to the Angels. By anybodys definition he has been a bust there-batting I think around 250. If the Cardinals had met his demands that would have tied their hands in going after any other players to make the club playoff ready last year or this year or beyond. Maybe this has already been talked about and sorry if this is in the wrong section but the way things have turned out was almost predictable-high profile, mega money trades have a habit of not working out. Pujols gave St Louis many great years and helped them to two Series titles but in essence, we traded a guy who just doesn't have the stuff he had 3-4 years ago. If you look at his numbers in St louis, they were down from his peak years and declining. Meanwhile, the Cardinals have the best record in baseball. And their farm system looks solid-they will be a playoff contending team for the forseeable future.

Ham Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 I think the Cards were willing to give him a lot of dollars, but a max of 2-3 years. Ten year deals to an aging super star are TOO RISKY. Albert got paid. He was loved and well rewarded in St Louis. Someone filled his head with crap and he got his feelinngs hurt. Too bad for him that he left St Louis. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. LittleRedFisherman Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 Agreed, he wasn't the same player the last two years the Cards had him. He sold out for money no matter how many times he tells us he "prayed about it". He could of had a statue next to Stan, but then again, I'm kinda glad that Stan will still be the all time Cardinal great. When you look at how Stan carried himself, helped people in need, served our country, and of course all those Stats, he deserves to be considered the all time greatest Cardinal. The Cardinals farms system was featured in sport Iliusstrated recently on the success and talent they have down there. There saying this Taveras guy could be a mix of Trout and Harper, that will be fun to watch! There's no such thing, as a bad day fishing!
moguy1973 Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 While I agree that he doesn't have the 10 years that the Angels gave him left in his professional baseball body, I disagree that he has declined much over his peak years. Last year's numbers were pretty darn good for starting off as poorly as he did. This year's start is mirroring last years start, but he is fighting through numerous injuries. Am I glad he's gone from St Louis? I sure am...While it would have been great to have the guy retire as a Cardinal--and possibly the greatest Cardinal of all time--the amount of money the Cardinals would have wasted on one person would have caused a great detriment to a very good farm system that will now continue to allow the Cardinals to bring up outstanding young players without having to break the bank to trade for a big name player to take them over the top. The Cardinals never really have been a team to stack their team by trading for talent. That being said the Cardinals are stacked at just about every position by using their great farm system, and they are also very deep at every position so if someone goes down with an injury, they have someone that is comparatively talented to step in. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Members Wornica Posted May 28, 2013 Members Posted May 28, 2013 The brains of the Cardinals are owner Bill DeWitt and general manager John Mozeliak. They deserve a lot of the credit for the stellar state of affairs that the Cardinals find themselves in. One classy organization!
Brian K. Shaffer Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 I will comment come playoff time. This division we are in is going to be tough all year... and our pitching has been riding on a prayer the last few weeks. by the way, there is a Sports topic on this forum : http://forums.ozarkanglers.com/forum/163-sports/ Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
