ollie Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Went down to the Big Sugar yesterday to what was going on. Got on the water by 8:00 and nobody else was around. That's always a good thing! Cloudy skies all around me and I'm thinking it's going to be a good day. Started off real slow with only a couple small smallies and then the action picked up a bit. Started out throwing a plastic worm and caught a few then switched over to a fluke, but not much there. Put on the lizard then things picked up a bit more. Let's see, it rained on me for awhile. That felt pretty good. Then I switched back over to the worm and caught this nice largemouth for the biggest of the day. By now it was noon and I was getting tired of catching the smaller ones so I decided to call it a day. As I was pulling out Sugar Island was putting in a party crowd. They were quite entertaining. "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!

ollie Posted June 10, 2013 Author Posted June 10, 2013 He or she only went 15" to the tape, but looked like a toad so I took a pic. It's nice to see that part of the stream with water in it! Last year this whole stretch was bone dry by the end of July. Keep the rain coming I say! Guest Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 I was there yesterday, wade fishing. Every bass we caught was guarding a nest. Nothing huge but they were released.

Although I have a feeling the largemouth was on a nest from just looking at it's tail fin. Mind you I only went from deep ford upstream about a mile or so. Most of that water is deeper and fast. I guess I could have caught some of the nest, but I hope not because I don't like doing that nor do I condone anyone else targeting them that way. By accident ok. Guest Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 The short bass are nesting. Im talking about 6-8" fish. nothing to get all excited about. The bigger ones are chasing minnows around the bedding areas. I was tempted to try a top water after watching a 16-18" smallmouth busting on minnows. I was fishing slower water in the shade of a large bluff bank. Lots of snakes out too.

I wish they could have spawned before the end of May. Heck, I didn't even see any snakes! Weather wasn't to ideal for me either though.
