Members BrowningFisherman Posted July 7, 2013 Members Posted July 7, 2013 If you were tricked into buying a Coleman Exponent stove that requires Powermax fuel I have 2 canisters of fuel left, we have decided to go with another stove that we hope will have canisters manufactured for many years to come. When I first found out about the end of Powermax I searched everywhere and to this day the only place I can find it is ebay and currently the cheapest bottle is $26. If you need some I am willing to part with the 2 bottles I have at a discounted rate. PM me if you are interested, I am in Springfield but will be making a trip to LOZ and Columbia, MO in the near future.
RSBreth Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 They make an adapter for different canisters now - if you want real versatility don't go with any canister powered stove - I've been using the MSR WhisperLite for about 20 years - can't beat it and I've used both Coleman fuel and plain old kerosene and it works great with either.
lee G. Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 yep, i got 3 svea 123,s and a optimus 8r, no problem with fuel.
jdmidwest Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Dang ole coleman fuel is running about 10 bucks now. I will stick with propane unless I need to travel light. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Chief Grey Bear Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 How can you travel lighter than a bottle of propane? Weighs almost nothing and takes up almost no room. Unless you are talking just using what ever wood you find on the way. Then I buy what you are selling. lee G. Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 I havent checked, are the gas canister's cheaper in the long run than coleman fuel?
jdmidwest Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 You can refill the propane canisters from a bulk tank and save some money. Last ones I bought, a 2 pack was around 5 bucks. Don't know what the equivalent would be propane bottles vs gal of Coleman fuel. Less mess. I have a little alcohol burner when I want to pack light and just heat some water. I would not pack a propane cylinder in a backpack and trip off thru the woods. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
RSBreth Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 One gallon of Coleman fuel goes a long way in a good stove like the MSR. The 20 oz. bottle won't run out cooking two meal a day for week for me. Propane canisters don't last that long - just in case everyone missed it he was selling canisters for a backpacking stove - not a gas grill with a refillable tank. ...And I think we may have hi-jacked the thread.
jdmidwest Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 I caught the first part about a stove with a unique form of fuel, like most did. I think it just went on from there. I wonder how much longer Coleman fuel will be made? Whatever happened to a dual fuel stove that burns unleaded gas? Did ethanol kill that?
