Pheasant Tail Nymphs - Weighted Or Not ?

i fished crane last week & started with a weighted san juan with a bhpht trailing. I never got a hit until I switch to a red PMX dropping a BHHE, I caught 3, all about 10-12" on the PMX. I was fishing in the middle of the day, the water was high and running clear, not crystal clear but clear enough.
