Members hambandit Posted July 22, 2013 Members Posted July 22, 2013 My girlfriend and I are looking for a place to float/fish that's less crowded than the niangua. Thinking about staying at richs last resort. Any tips/pointers? Good place to stay? Other options? I'd like a cabin with ac to cool off in afterwards.
Al Agnew Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 The Big Piney above Rich's is not as crazy as the Niangua but it will still be crowded on most summer weekends for the 6 mile float down to the resort. Another option might be Boiling Spring Campground and Canoe Rental. This is the Boiling Spring that's further upstream on the Piney, near Licking, not the one on the Gasconade below the mouth of the Big Piney, near Dixon. They have air conditioned cabins. Only problem is that it's far enough upstream that the water might be low enough that you'd do some dragging above the place. By the way, the other Boiling Spring Campground, the one on the Gasconade, is a nice place, but I don't think they have cabins, and that stretch of the Gasconade will probably be pretty crazy with jetboats.
Members hambandit Posted July 22, 2013 Author Members Posted July 22, 2013 Thanks for the tips Al. Looks like the only place with cabins available is wilderness ridge. A guy I work with was there a few weeks ago and said its nice. Anyone know anything about this place?
Al Agnew Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 It's okay as far as I know, and that stretch of the Piney is gorgeous, if a bit crowded.
Members hambandit Posted July 23, 2013 Author Members Posted July 23, 2013 When you say crowded how would it compare to the niangua or James on a summer weekend?
Al Agnew Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Well, both Rich's and Wilderness Ridge rent quite a few canoes and such, but they are the only two outfitters that serve that section. Since I haven't floated it on a weekend in many years, I can't say for sure, but I'd guess it would be less than half as crowded as the most popular stretch of the Niangua. Nearly all the canoe day traffic comes in the six mile stretch from Six Crossings to Ross Bridge. I don't know for sure whether either Rich's or Wilderness Ridge is too keen on putting in canoes at Slabtown, which would make a LONG day float down to their places if you're fishing, but I do know the Slabtown to Six Crossings stretch gets a lot less traffic. But both outfitters are pretty expensive on shuttles of private canoes even to Six Crossings, which is a very short shuttle, so they'd probably charge a lot to take you up to Slabtown.
Gavin Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Slabtown is too long for a day float unless you start at dawn and paddle through all the slack water...The shuttle is expensive.$55-60 last time I paid for one. I'm not sure if they even offer it on a Saturday or Sunday. 6x down can be a Zoo if you hit the plug of renters.

Members hambandit Posted August 10, 2013 Author Members Posted August 10, 2013 It rained Friday night but we had a great time anyways!
