Big Brown Trout Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Since this is actually my first post on OA thought I would also say hi and glad to finally post on the forum So a little about myself..... im 26, married and only somewhat recently got into fly fishing. I love every second I spend out on the rivers and creeks, and even better when the fish are biting. I live in Neosho, so I frequent Hickory and Capps creek, Shoal Creek, and Elk River. anyway took the wife to roaring river today. it was a mess. debris everywhere, water was way up and rushing. met Timsfly at his shop today. very nice guy I was really impressed with his shop and his products, I bought a bunch of flies, several of which he suggested himself. lost two which looked like brown wooly buggers with bright orange tails, these worked great in zone two I had lots of fish hooked but lost them in the strong current. everyone around seemed to have large quantities of big trout. about 10 minutes before the 8 o'clock alarm I found myself in the only calm pocket of water in the park. nobody was around and in a small window of about fifteen square feet I saw several trout rising. I couldn't see what they were eating so I frantically tore through my fly box for anything small. I caught one good sized one on a bead head prince nymph and another on a tiny black ant dryfly I bought from Timsfly. it was very challenging fishing today, probably way above my skill level for fly fishing, just glad I caught something for the dinner table. Let the summer of Carp, begin.
laker67 Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Welcome bbt, and thanks for the report. Nothing we like better than a fishing report. I am sure conditions were tuff so you did okay on your outing. you mentioned that you fish those creeks around neosho, several oaf members live and fish nearby. You may have already met up wtih some.
Buzz Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Welcome to the forum BBT. Thanks for the report. I fish Hickory and Capps a lot during the winter months. Maybe I'll see you on the water. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
Wayne SW/MO Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Welcome and don't forget, you don't learn much when the fishing is easy and it will never be above your head if you don't give up. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted August 10, 2013 Root Admin Posted August 10, 2013 First post - a fishing report and pictures attached?! Everyone should take note! Thank you very much for the post!
Brian K. Shaffer Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Agreed! Great first post! Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
Big Brown Trout Posted August 11, 2013 Author Posted August 11, 2013 thanks for the welcome guys hope to see you guys out on the water someday. Let the summer of Carp, begin.
BFTMASTER Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 I wonder how many trout were automatically stocked with the hatchery flooding like it was? Looked like a couple runs got flushed. Outside the park should be good for a while too!
BFTMASTER Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 I did really well in area 3 bouncing 1/4oz. brown and orange jigs in the off colored water. Kept (4) really nice trout in about an hour for the family. Really nice fishing the area with only three other people. I did feel really bad for the people that were trying to enjoy camping when that flood hit, can't imagine having to pack up in a straight down downpour. All over the road and grass was thousands of sculpins and crawfish stranded and drying out in the sun. Found someones nice hotdog/marshmellow sticks. If they can tell me the campsite the were left at, I will gladly ship them, no charge.

Outside the park should be good for a while too! when we left Friday night we went up to the hatchery to watch them stock, water was rushing through the parking lot and down the hill. i'm sure tons of trout got washed out of the runways. Let the summer of Carp, begin.
