Members JD Dudley Posted August 11, 2013 Members Posted August 11, 2013 Just looked at the lake level and it jumped almost half a foot today after the rise slowed down yesterday. Also looked online at White River in Goshen and it says the river rose and crested at a little above 14 feet just today. Was there rain on the WRWS today? I was watching the guages online all day Thursday and after all the rain we got early Thursday, the White River crested at 5 feet, which tells me one of three things about the readings today... either the website is really screwed up, there was a TON of rain around Winslow, or Lake Sequoia Dam broke this afternoon. Anyone have any idea what's going on?
Members JD Dudley Posted August 11, 2013 Author Members Posted August 11, 2013 One more thing... I fished last night between Hickory and PC and there was some debris in the mainlake, but a LOT of it in the creeks. Water clarity was normal.
Quillback Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 There was rain south of Fayetteville, maybe some of it fell in the White river drainage area?
Feathers and Fins Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Debris in the creek arms is nothing new when the lake comes up or has a lot of rain it just releases the debris on shore or wash-down from the heavy rain. Main lake debris will show up 3 to 5 days after the rain causes by wind, lake rise and wake from boats releasing more debris. As to the lake rise there was a fair amount of it in the WRWS area as well as other arms. Its actually surprised me we didn't see a larger rise but the majority seemed to be in the northern end of the lake and that doesn't cause the major rise as a rule. Had areas from Lowell to Fayetteville had the 10 inches the lake would have shot up much more. Watch out reading the gauges I watched them myself and they kept readjusting the online numbers. It doesn't appear they are releasing much water out of the dam so this is not an unexpected rise. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
JohnF52 Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 It rained a lot yesterday morning in the upper watershed between Crosses and Pettigrew. That caused the rise, and it took several hours to get to the gauge, which is actually at the Wyman bridge.
Members JD Dudley Posted August 11, 2013 Author Members Posted August 11, 2013 F&F, yesterday's rise wasn't a result of Thursday mornings rain as that rise had already started cresting. Yesterdays, was caused by something else. John, How much rain was it or do you know?
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted August 11, 2013 Root Admin Posted August 11, 2013 There's been a bunch of freak rains in the area. Friday evening about 7:30, a rain came in here at the resort. It poured for about 5 minutes. One the other side of the ridge to the north (other side of 76), it rained over 2 inches in 30 minutes causing local flash floods. It was so localized that no one in town knew what happened expect in a small neighborhood which had a wall of water come down the small drainages. Last week, a small area south of town close to the airport got 8 inches of rain in an hour causing Turkey Creek to come out of it's banks. It blew through several businesses, taking out walls and leaving a foot of mud in buildings. Heck- it may rain in uninhabited areas but the wash may flood houses and bridges - no one even knew it rained and may be flooded out. Sounds like this what happened here. These rain events have been something else.

I'm with you in that I don't think I've seen it rain like this in August before. How was Alaska this year?
JohnF52 Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Two to three inches in a short period yesterday morning in the upper watershed. I keep close tabs bc I have a cabin near Pettigrew and go there every couple of weeks at least.
Quillback Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Just drove over to Lost Bridge North, water is still clear up at that end of the lake. On the road in you could see where water and debris had come over the road, but it's all cleaned up now. But we're supposed to get more rain starting tomorrow morning. Sheesh.
