LittleRedFisherman Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 I know this isn't really an Ozarks river, but thought I post this video anyways. I've been bass fishing a lot the past few years, but this is my raising right here, what I have done since I was big enough to be on a river. As far as catching catfish, you would have to look hard to find a river better than the Mississippi. Although I prefer to eat fish out of the St. Francis, I like to get a head start on my "fish fry stash" in the ole Muddy. This was like the first time for my partners to be on this river, I think my friend Jody's little boy Ethan is ready to go back! Took the gopro on this trip as usual lately, so I put this together, hope you enjoy! There's no such thing, as a bad day fishing!
Members Wornica Posted August 18, 2013 Members Posted August 18, 2013 That was a great video! Thanks!
bfishn Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Excellent! Thank you! I'm gonna ask Santa to bring you a real dipnet. The fish you're lookin' for, that net won't hold. :-) I'd be (were I you, of course) tied to that bank with some 1/2 lb skipjacks or carp on R&R. Purely in the name of science. I believe in river monstrers. Well done. I can't dance like I used to.

I believe in river monstrers. Well done. Lol, yeah I was waiting for someone to mention that.. The guy that taught me how do do this, used to have a net that would net a 100 pounder if needed, we did net a 72 one time. I do like Carp for bait, but my favorite that we used to use is what we call riceslicks, or a green sunfish..lol. Flathead love them, but they do tend to die easy, those goldfish hold up tho. This bait was to small, we usually use fish almost big enough to eat, that usually gets you a 20 plus pounder or 4. Glad ya'll liked the video, it was fun all the way around. I didn't however video us cleaning fish for hours...lol There's no such thing, as a bad day fishing!
bfishn Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Yeah, greenies. The ones you can palm and not get poked. A tip for them. change the water at least once 15-20 minutes after loading them in the well. They tend to void themselves at either or both ends after capture, loading enough ammonia even an areator can't cope. If you're loaded up, change it twice. Once that's over, they're pretty easy to keep. I can't dance like I used to.
Old plug Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 That brings back memories. I have fished a lot above St Louis. One if my choices for retirement was Clarksville. I wanted a dock however with my boat there no more driving, launch ramps etc. I will tell anyone who ask though that LOZ in spite of its reputation as a fishing hot spot will never in a million years hold a candle to the Mississippi. There are also walleye, sauger, white and yellow bass. And even a good largemouth and small mouth fishery if you can find the place. I have seen the river in the winter around Clarksville nearly blue. I and a friend caught 62 Walleye and sauger one day at clarksville. Most were sauger but there us not really a whole lot of difference except size. I have not had one of those taste little yellow bass in years either. To me they were as good as crappie. Well as far as crappie go the stringers in the Mississippi can sure turn a few heads. It is a wonder that there has not been a crappie up there.
E Green Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 cool video! I have never done anything like that but I would love to ona smaller scale. I am heading to Branson and staying at some resort right on table rock lake(first time in branson). I would love to make some type of line with about 10 hooks on it that I could take out on my kayak, drop it tie other end to something on shore and then check it in the AM or later in the evening. not sure where to begin but I am going to do some research and figure it out! will report back.....never caught any blues or flatheads before and would love to check that off my MO Ozark life bucketlist...haha
Quillback Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 Thanks for the video, look like some fish fry makings.
