Quillback Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Launched out of Big M at about 0600 and it was very foggy. Started on a point near the Big M and caught a couple on the black/red flake Ol Monster, one of which was a 2.5 lb. Boga certified, Meanmouth (I believe it's a Meanmouth, but I have set up a poll to get your expert opinions. 2.5 lb. bass is normally no big deal, but a 2.5 lb. Meanmouth would be my personal best Meanie. Went back into a big cove and picked up several nice bass pitching a creature (black/blue Meagabug) to docks, including a 3 lb. LM and a couple of fat 2 lb. spots. The the fog burned off... Once the sun came out things got tough, I picked up a couple of shorts on a c-rigged UV Speed craw. Tried the Drop shot for a bit, only one bite. On the trailer at 1130. Water temp 83. Here's the suspected Meanie. And the 3 lb. creature eater.
Bill Babler Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Nice fish. Those two are worth more than my scrawny deep fish any day. Great Job. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
Quillback Posted August 23, 2013 Author Posted August 23, 2013 Well Bill, it was your report that convinced me that I probably wasn't going to do any good deep, so I rolled the dice and went shallow. Blind squirrel found a nut, at least while the fog lasted.
MOsmallies Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 What a beautiful meanmouth at that. Thick and healthy looking with absolutely no blemishes on it whatsoever. And look at the size of that tail!!! Nice largemouth as well
Pepe Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 Quill, thanks for keeping us posted. My wife and I are enjoying the quiet and calm waters the last few mornings but we miss the topwater action. We were out before dawn yesterday and did not catch a fish until 7:30. After that we did pretty well working a fluke type bait around shady side of docks and went in at 10. We went out at 7 this morning and drug some different (experimental) plastics around in 18 to 30 feet with only moderate success and no keepers. As mentioned, when it got bright & hot the bite died. We never saw anything but Gar on top. We started at Point 22 and fished up to Carters before putting the rods away and taking a ride up to Beavertown. Haven't been that far up the White in years. I am surprised how dark the water is all the way up the river. We stopped on the way back and ate lunch at Big M. Good burgers and hot wings!
Quillback Posted August 24, 2013 Author Posted August 24, 2013 Danger, I'm not seeing much top water action either, saw a few bass chasing shad on top, but they never were within casting range and they don't stay up long enough to make it worthwhile to move over to where they were at.
*T* Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Meanmouth. May be wrong but don't they sometimes have more characteristics of a smallmouth and then others look more like a spotted bass. Great fish! "Water is the driving force of all Nature." -Leonardo da Vinci
