long answer is I've tried it and could get it to power on, but couldn't get the display to work.

I have done it in the past & whether it was skill or dumb luck it worked. As the cable is very similar to shielded TV CABLE you may want to see if RADIO SHACK has a cable splice available.The biggest problems are making sure that the outer shield completely surrounds and protects the core or you will have a great deal of electrical interference show up on your screen, and if it is in an area where it can get wet the connection must be weather-proof. Each time I had this type of problem the break was open to the elements and had to be weather-proof so by the time I finished the repair it was big & ugly but, it worked & got me through the trips, then after the trips I replaced the cable as it was just to ugly to look at. Had I had an actual cable splice maybe the repairs would have been pretty enough to leave alone.

What Nitroman said. No step for a stepper that's familiar with electronics. Waste of time if not.
