Dutch Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 I tried them out earlier this week and got hung in some brush piles. Needless to say they are still there. Is there any way to get the beads and blade back when you break off? I have tried a few ideas and all of them were bust.
bfishn Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 I lose at least a couple most trips, have for years. That said, you can ensure your rigs don't have any weak spots. If you're snelling multiple hooks, use hooks with a turned-down eye for that purpose. If you have a magnifier, take a close look at the clevises you bought. If there's evidence of any burrs, find a different source. I can't dance like I used to.
rps Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 The quick answer is no. However, if you use a single light wire 1/0 J bend plastic worm hook and rig the crawler like it was plastic, you will hang up less. Less hangs = less fewer lost rigs. In addition, when you do hang, slow steady pressure often bends the hook and you get the rig back.
Dutch Posted September 1, 2013 Author Posted September 1, 2013 I think my hook choice was bad. I'll try lighter wire hooks and hadn't even thought of using a jig hook on a crawler. I have hundreds of jig hooks from #4 to 4/0. How do you think it would work with a # 2 instead of a 1/0? Would that be too small?

rps Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 This is what I use: http://www.ttiblakemore.com/home/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=696&category_id=125&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=2 except I use size 1/0. Recently the Wally World in Cassville has carried these.
Dutch Posted September 1, 2013 Author Posted September 1, 2013 Thanks again. How about the #2 or #1 are they too small? I buy hooks by the 1000 ct and have hundreds of 2, 1, 1/0 and 2/0 and I ordered 400 blades yesterday. I just don't want the hooks to be too small if I am going to make up a bunch and have them on hand.
powerdive Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 When you hang a 2-hook harness on a rock or brushpile, don't whale on it--that will only bury the hooks deeper. Just gently turn around and go back, keeping your line taut but not super-tight. Get directly over the top of the snag, and start lightly working the rod tip around. Not hard, though--again, by just lightly moving your rod tip here and there in small motions, you're shifting the weight of the bouncer down below (you'll feel it), getting leverage on the hook from different directions. At least 3 times out of 4, you'll get your rig back.Quickly check for bent/dull hooks and line frays, and fish on. Note: it helps A LOT if your main line is braid. And as a reminder, the leader on the harness needs to be a lighter pound test than the main line. One thing you can do when a modest-sized brushpile shows up on sonar while bouncing: quickly lift your rod tip up high and hit turbo speed for a couple seconds, to shoot the harness over the top. Then, allow to settle and resume.
exiledguide Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 I never used anything bigger than a size 2 hook on spinner rigs and that was when we were fishing minnows or leeches, 6 and 4 for crawlers. I used them because that was what the guides used up north and 12lb main line and 8lb or 6lb on the leader. I also agree with powerdive at least 99%
Dutch Posted September 1, 2013 Author Posted September 1, 2013 My main line is 50# Power Pro because I am using my Arig setup. I have 8-17 mono and fluro to use on the spinner rigs. With all of the brush piles on Stockton I know I'll lose a bunch but I want to try the jig hook. Is the 1/0 the one to use or is that for experienced guys like rps? BTW I noticed that the hook eye is turned in you link posted by rps. I have read that it should be that way for snelled hooks. Is that a real important item as fuel alone to go to Cassville and get some would be over $30.
