Big Keene
Hi all, we will be down this weekend hunting for 'Eyes. Has anyone been having any consistent success catching them during this late summer heat wave? looks like the weather will break a little by then, but do you think that a cold front will have as much of an impact now as it does in the spring? planning on jigs and crawlers, bottom bouncers and trolling cranks in the 10-20 fow zone. we will be fishing out of the state park marina. P.S. where do the crappie go this time of year? thanks all Keene Illegitimi non carborundum (Never let the bastards grind you down)
lmt out
I think you are probably on the right track with what you are planning. We have done really well this summer with those same tactics but we fished last tue and wed and tue. the wife and I had 14 fish only 4 keepers and wed morning only 5 shorts. So I think that I am probably off the fish a little bit. We have caught a lot of keepers this year but we have caught 5 times as many shorts this year as last, hopefully that means good fishing next year. Good luck and let us know how you do. Dutch
I'm planning to try the bottom bouncers and spinner rigs on Friday. This will be my third time for this type of fishing. I'll probably be in the High Point area. I fished the Big Sac the other two times and blanked.
dennis boatman
Fished crawler harness Monday, mostly 20 to 25 feet. No Walleye, lots of perch nibbles, one crappie, 3 small bass, and one big catfish...32"...he was a beast... A strike indicator is just a bobber... mjk86
made it out sat about 8hrs and sunday about 4hrs (state park marina). Trolling cranks and jigging crawlers. Also dunked minnows on brush piles with no luck. Ended up with 3 keeper walleye, and a handful of shorts (lost two borderline keepers at the boat). A keeper bass and lots of shorts, a crappie and a white bass, and lots of drum (no catfish...odd). Seemed like the walleye were best in about 15 fow on gravel flats and long shallow points. Most came on 7m flicker shads right off the bottom.
9LB
I have not done much with the bottom bouncers this season. I would tie on a pink jighead and a nightcrawler and fish the river channels and the flats close to them. 15-20 foot and keep the jig moving, try to keep the Catfish away or you will go through $36 wirth of crawlers. Since when did nightcrawlers start costing so much. I think they are like 40 cents each nowadays !
9LB
Shiner - I think every year we say "with all these shorts next year is going to be great!" We need a walleye season close it down and open it on 3/15 or so. All these short walleyes have truly turned me into a bass fisherman. I might trade the deep V in for some Anchor sticks ! kwall
9lb, I think an option is raise the length limit 1" a year for next 2 years -- I catch mostly keepers early in the season, I belive the keepers rarely make it back to the water as the season progresses , I understand its hard to throw back such a tasty fish but if MDC did I think there would be more and better fish in just a few short years
