Members TroyMize Posted September 19, 2013 Members Posted September 19, 2013 My three brothers and I will be at the white river Thursday through Sunday of next week and I am looking for a bit of advice. I have read all the Ozark fishing forums and guide reports/blogs, but with so much information(and/or little in some cases) I simply do not know where to start. We have a guided trip booked for that Friday which I belive will lead us in the right direction for the remainder of the trip. That being said, we will be there Thursday morning (driving up Wednesday evening) and not have any real idea of where to fish for the day on Thursday. We would like to wade fish, but we are certainly open to suggestions. For you white river regulars, if you had a group of four guys where would you start? Any specific advice on fishing the white this time of year? Thanks for any help!
Members go4ducks2 Posted September 19, 2013 Members Posted September 19, 2013 Only been there 3 times with a boat, but if I were wade fishing, which I did up by the dam and it was great(kinda towards the end of the camp ground)...zebra midge(black silver) 4ft under a thinga ma bob. Park at the boat ramp at Wildcat Shoals would be my second choice.....better yet stop in at Dallys Fly Shop and talk to those guys or that fly shop up by the dam(west side) everybody down there is real helpful so don't be afraid to ask. Or you could go to Blue Heron camp ground, talk to Terry and pay 5 bucks to access his property, lots of access there upstream and down. I hope you get more responses, but from my experience ON HERE.....theres more people who want to just read and not do a whole lot of contributing......thank goodness for John Berry and Phil Lilley.......I've learned more about the White and Taney from reading their info...woulda took me at least a dozen trips and still not figure it all out. Make sure you post a report when you get back....I live vicariously through other peoples reports....I think I have an addiction!!

DaddyO Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Don't rule out the Norfork tailwater. Park in Quarry park, below the dam, and fish all the areas that look fishy. If you are fly fishing, use all the normal tailwater flies. i.e. midges, scuds, nymphs, eggs, olive or black wooly bugger, etc. I like a #18 black zebra midge with a copper bead and copper rib under a small indicator. If you are spincasting, I like rooster tail spinners, road runners, spoons, etc.. Have fun and let us know how your trip went. DaddyO We all make decisions; but, in the end, our decisions make us.
sfiser Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 and if you go to norfork be watchful for rising water. If you are a noob to the white and norfork and that water comes on (especially at norfork), you can get in a bad situation real fast. You got some really good advice above on places and flies to use. Regardless of which river you fish, take your cell phone and call the powerhouse to check the current generation 870-431-5311. I hate taking my cell phone when i fish but i never ever go to norfork without it.
cnr Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 You can try a few spots for wading on the White. Rim shoals or Wildcat shoals are always good if the water is safe to wade.
bferg Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Make your first stop into Dally's fly shop and get the down low from them. Your options are obviously limited based on whatever the water is doing at that point so make sure you are up to speed on the flow. To check the flow I like to use the App with real time numbers. Calling the number mentioned above is good but it only tells you how many units are turned on....when the real information you need is the CFS (how much flow are they generating). To get the app Search for USACE Little Rock in the app store. We lived by it this weekend. I am partial to Rim Shoals- especially the hike down to the power lines. But as a general rule for me: when in doubt nymph with a red San Juan worm. For streamers: I start with a white wooly bugger and start changing from there.
Members TroyMize Posted September 24, 2013 Author Members Posted September 24, 2013 One last question before we head out tomorrow: Does anyone know if the cell reception any good on the river or around town? Will I still be able to accept calls and check my e-mails? Thanks for all your help guys.
Ham Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Cell reception gets better as the years roll along. I've got AT&T which is no great in the sticks and I have fairly decent recption in lots of areas. You should be OK especially if you have Verizon. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. Be in the river and enjoy the low tech life for a few hours. OK.... We're all going to act like you didn't just ask that question.
