Lancer09 Posted January 23, 2014 Author Posted January 23, 2014 It's tied on an Owner worm hook so most of the hook's weight is on that side of the eye and to help it flip even more I hid some lead wire in the belly. It swims right in my bathtub. Was the tub filled specifically for the purpose of testing this frog fly or was an actual bath the result of filling the tub, and fly testing just happened to take place?
Members MikeH Posted January 23, 2014 Members Posted January 23, 2014 Just for the fly. That worm hook isn't getting anywhere near my worm while I'm in the tub.
Members MikeH Posted January 24, 2014 Members Posted January 24, 2014 Did you spin the hair over the lead? I've watched a lot of frogs in ponds and noticed when, at rest, their back end is usually below the water and their head is the only think above the surface. I'm wondering how putting some weight or a bead behind the spun hair, near the bend, would effect the action. I'll have to play around with it. I stacked it and trimmed it then added the lead. I super glued a doubled over piece of wire to the belly then epoxied over it to make sure it doesn't go anywhere, painted the epoxy and a coat of hydro for good measure. Since the shank is off center on those hooks wrapping lead on the shank should do the same thing but when I tried it the gel spun thread kept cutting through the lead when I was stacking the hair. From what I could tell it's going to dive under when stripped then pop back up. All the weight is in the back half so it seems to sit a lot like you're saying the real ones do. I guess I'll find out this spring how it really performs.

Lancer09 Posted February 5, 2014 Author Posted February 5, 2014 wow lancer that deciever is awesome.....any suggestions on where i could learn how to tie that? A lot of practice. That is still sloppier than I would like to tie it. Watch Brian Wise's videos, he has a lot of good stuff on streamers. Through his Flyfishingtheozarks youtube channel, the videos he has done with Dally's, and SCOF. The main thing is not putting to much material on each fly and having your proportions right. Take your time. The Deceiver is just a schlappen tail, a little flashabou, polar chenille and a clump of bucktail on the top and bottom of the 20 mm shank. The middle is a 35 mm shank with the same process minus the tail and two clumps of bucktail. The front is a Size 2 b10s with two clumps and then a reverse tied clump. A lot of my bucktail flies I like to run under hot water for a few seconds to make the fibers softer.
Lancer09 Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 Olive over White double deceiver with a 20 mm shank in the middle. Olive bucktail. Gamechanger
