Quillback Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 I couldn't agree more Jerry.....when I watch SLU it's like okay that's good basketball, conversely watching Missouri is enough to make you sick....un skilled big men and horrible guard play with a very selfish style. Will Missouri make the Tourney???? who cares because they will get destroyed if they do.....Haith better start recruiting because the future is coming fast. all I can say is thank goodness I get to root for SLU a very well coached TEAM.....I want Missouri to do good but, what Haith has going right now is ugly to watch. HA, you should watch Arkansas, I thought Anderson was supposed to be a good coach. I see little evidence of that so far. But he's still new, so I'm hoping in a year or two he can field an NCAA tourney capable team.

Some of us do not have the luxury of just switching allegiances when another team happens to have a slightly higher winning percentage:) But for real, I agree with you that are big men are the defintion of unskilled. The exception being JWIII who is still raw, but has a ton of potential. But horrible guard play? I don't know of anyone that would agree with you on that. They (Clarkson, Brown, and Ross) have a "selfish" style, because they are the only ones that are capable of scoring on a regular basis. For such horrible guards, there are sure a lot of folks saying that Brown and Clarkson are the best backcourt duo in the SEC. The reality is that we are 16-4 in a rebuilding season. That's not bad.
snap Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 .....i beg to differ watching SLU......!!! I think they are well coached, but the skill level, IMO, is a notch below watching mizzou and the SEC teams !!! they don't have the shooters MIZZOU has, or the guard play......clarkson is a handful at the point for everybody they have played at this point and jabari brown and ross are scoring machines......they look like they are putting it together!!! and they did put it together vs arkansas.......Do not think SLU can go into arkansas and win!!!!!!!!!!
ozark trout fisher Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 I agree, Snap. Not to pick on the Atlantic Ten, but in a major conference you have to bring it every night. The SEC gets a bad rap, but there are really only two "bad" teams (South Carolina and Auburn.) The rest will beat any team that doesn't come out and play well in any given game. No one thinks of teams like Texas A&M, LSU, Alabama, or Vanderbilt as being good teams. But they all have quality talent, and when you get them on their home court they are a tough out. You just don't get Fordham or Duquesne popping up on the schedule. That's not to come down on the Atlantic Ten. SLU, UMass, VCU, and George Washington are all good teams that will scare people in March if they can get in (SLU is a lock, unless they essentially lose the rest of their games, but the rest still have to play well down the stretch just to get to the NCAAs.) But the dropoff is a lot, lot steeper after that IMO.
stlfisher Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 If MU was coached like SLU they would very tough to beat. SLU Is probably one of the best defensive teams in the country. I am not guite sure of haith as a coach, but that man can recruit. As far as anderson the one thing about his style is when it works the team looks almost unbeatable, but it is a longer time to build and teach that style. When it doesn't work it can look atrocious. I remember when MU dismantled Memphis in the tourney several years ago, that was his style at it best.

Wisconsin makes it work, but really, the list isn't long at all. Missouri has improved enough on that end to where it's not embarassing. If we could have our current defense and the 2011-12 offense we'd be a lock for the final four:) But yeah, you could definitely argue SLU has the best defense in the country. The problem for them, is that to advance very far in the NCAAs their offense will need to improve dramatically. Because according to most rating systems they are well in the bottom half of D-1 on that side of the ball.

You must have a big, long-armed, quick player to play the point on the press, and a shot blocker--stopper down at the other end if it's broken. You must have several very quick guys to get the steals. And you must have depth, with backups for all those different parts. And...all those guys have to be able to play offense adequately, as well. Of course, if you have all those parts...you can probably play a lot of other styles very well, too. AR in its heyday under Nolan Richardson had a bunch of guys that could have beaten you a bunch of different ways...maybe it wasn't the style so much as the personnel.
