Members Greg W Posted January 22, 2014 Members Posted January 22, 2014 That would also be a difficult choice for me. Do I fish for the white bass or the catfish.
MeatintheFreezer Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Several springs ago I was fishing Kings river for whites. I trolled across the mouth of a cove and my graph blacked out with bait fish. When my lures came through them I could feel my line coming through the bait. I stopped and dropped a spoon down, figuring it was whites. I ended up catching a limit of channels in about 10 minutes that were stuffed full of shad. They eventually got full and it broke apart. That was the first time- actually the only time I have ever experienced catfish sholling up like that. Remember - If at first you DO succeed, try not to act surprised & quit while you're ahead.
Old plug Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Anywhere from 20 to 30 ft. Some time I just cast the spoon. I love to catch the big cats. Also love to catch big gar. It is a nice way to enjoy yourself in the really hot dog day evenings. But not with spoons
Old plug Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Yeah meat in the freezer that is what they do they comei n and clean up after the white bass feed with there slashing style. When they get under those schools like that they will snap up a spon awful fast.
Feathers and Fins Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 With the right conditions and location you can catch cats on Beaver with spoons or crankbaits but the conditions have to be right. If we get the shad die-off im expecting in the next couple days to a week maybe two then spoons will be deadly on them. The other time of year they are predictable is spring heavy run-off rains in creek channels. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Old plug Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Fins until this past year or so we were blessed up here with a lot of big cats. Seem to be a lot harder to came by. Biggest one i caught this year was 17lbs. And that was on a deep hump over 30 ft deep.
Feathers and Fins Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 OP, I think a lot of it has to do with population increase and more people fishing. I grew up fishing a great Catfish lake but as population increased catching them became harder each year, my dad says he hasn't heard of any being caught in a very long time. Regulations are great but they don't account for extreme populations changes. Catfish biggest enemy is themselves and their tasty meat I do believe. Then again I have seen pollution do it as well. I remember the Salton Sea when Corvina were king now they are gone. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
